I seems to me that if the child is so far gone that he/she is harming animals then that child is in dire need of professional assistance, I don't think a spanking is going to set them straight anyway. Harming animals shows a lack of empathy and points to something more serious - a sociopath? The average parent isn't really equipped to handle this -- I don't know who is but I doubt that spanking is the answer. There are many sociopaths/psychopaths who started out killing animals. They can grow up to be functional members of society, not causing any trouble, except that they are still sociopaths without empathy, although they may be very good doctors/lawyers/business persons, not murdering anyone, but not exactly warm loving people either.
I think this is caused by genetics and maybe childhood trauma of some sort, but I think a psychiatrist/psychologist or a counsellor of some sort is the person who might help these kids.
