The countdown is on until King Charles III is coronated on May 6.
To mark the occasion, The Providence Journal looked through our archives to see what we could find out about the royal's history with the Ocean State. As it turns out, he did come for one visit — albeit a brief one — more than two decades ago. Charles visited Rhode Island, specifically Newport, in the summer of 1996.
"It was, according to Providence Journal archives, a beautiful summer day on July 19, with calm seas and perfect for sailing on Narragansett Bay, which is how Charles spent most of his brief stop. He cruised aboard the Shamrock V, a former America’s Cup entry, while talking to 30 VIPs on board."
"At least on this occasion I wasn't told — as I usually am everywhere else I go in the world — that I should have been here yesterday or last week," he said. "I promise you, I am the subject of Murphy's law, because usually I'm told because it's thick fog or raining when I'm here that it would have been wonderful if I had been there yesterday. So, I obviously got here on the right day today."
"He didn’t come just to sail, as nice as that might have been. The main event was a 20-minute speech at a 250-guest, $500-a-ticket fundraiser for the Mary Rose Trust. The trust runs a museum and cares for artifacts from the Mary Rose, a 16th-century British warship that sank off the coast of England."
"Immediately after the speech, Charles, who had joked, "I have absolutely no idea where I was, or where I am, or where I'm going to after this," was put on a flight back to England. The Journal called him “the Stealth Prince,” because his news conference was only 15 seconds long and virtually no one outside of the event saw him."

King Charles 'rejects plans to rename Heathrow Airport terminal after him'
"King Charles reportedly called in ministers to block plans to rename a terminal at Heathrow Airport after him. The eco-conscious king is said to have shot down the plans, a matter of days ahead of his Coronation."
"Heathrow had reportedly wanted to mark the Coronation by renaming Terminal 5 after King Charles III, almost a decade after Terminal 2 was named the Queen’s Terminal, in 2014. But Buckingham Palace reportedly called in ministers to politely turn the offer down without causing embarrassment."

"The Times revealed the King’s polite refusal, and reported a government source said that 'environmental considerations' had left the monarch hesitant to take up the offer. A second source told the outlet it was turned down because of the lack of close connections between Charles and the airport."
"The King has long been an active environmentalist, and at Cop26 in Glasgow last year he called on the country to move to a “war-like footing” to deal with the “existential threat” that was climate change. He also called for a move from the “fossil-fuel-based economy” to a sustainable one."
"Instead, the airport is marking the Coronation with a commemorative luggage tag. On their website Heathrow called climate change “the greatest challenge of our time” and admitted their own carbon footprint is “part of the problem”. Like the rest of the global economy, they aim for net zero carbon emissions by 2050, according to their Sustainability Plan."

Gimmy...YummmmmA team of sculptors have used an equivalent of 2,875 Celebrations chocolates to create a sweet, life-size sculpture of King Charles III
A bust of King Charles III made entirely from chocolate has been unveiled ahead of the coronation by sweets brand Celebrations. The sculpture took 130 hours to make and weighs over 23 kilograms.
Created by a team of sculptors and led by master chocolatier Jennifer Lindsey-Clarke, the life-size model was made to celebrate the upcoming coronation. The team carefully analysed footage of the King to capture his likeness, forming the monarch out of an equivalent of 2,875 Celebrations chocolates.

"Stone of Destiny" moved from Scotland to London for king's coronation
London — The "Stone of Destiny," an ancient symbol of Scotland's monarchy, was on its way from Edinburgh Castle to London on Friday to play its role in the coronation of King Charles III on May 6. The stone, also known as the "Stone of Scone," was used for the coronation of Scotland's kings until it was seized more than 700 years ago by the then-King of England, Edward I.

I am really looking forward to watching the Coronation. Coverage begins here at 5am ET, which is around when I get up. I know what I'll be doing Saturday. I know the pageantry will be great fun. I also look forward to seeing the 'average' people cheering the spectacle on.
I remember Elizabeth's coronation in the early '50's. We had a TV before our neighbors and a crowd of well-wishers gathered in our apartment. Great woman.

Both my parents attended boarding school in India. My mother went to Dow Hill at age 9 and my father went to Oak Grove when he was 5 due to his father dying of Pneumonia and leaving 5 children. Mother's father was in the Bengal Police, so the girls were sent off to boarding school. Both my parents loved the time they were away. They spent 9 months up in the hill stations and only saw the parents at Christmas time.
