Kitchens ~ any style goes

We're going to do some updates in our kitchen this year, too. I have gray slate tile for the floor & will be repainting the cabinets & walls. Behind the stove, I'm replacing the drywall in the stove alcove with 1x8 pine tongue & grove wood painted white so I can have my cast iron skillets hang from pipe over the stove. It will look similar to the first picture, but using the pipe style from the second. I want to add a few low open shelves on the side walls for salt/pepper/flour/etc. that are sitting on the cabinets now.

Oh, what I'd give for all that cast iron. Also, would want a few sauce pans and Dutch Oven. My brother got rid of all my mom's when she passed and we weren't too friendly after that debacle.

@Lewkat I started out with one cast iron skillet that belonged to my husbands uncle & aunt. I've added a lot over the years. My MIL had cast iron & was throwing it away when my husband told her we would take it. What she gave us was the Martha Stewart Chinese-made ones & the real cast iron had already been tossed . My husband was also upset because they had been his Grandma's.

I keep looking for more cast iron at yard sales, thrift shops & antique stores since you don't know what you'll find.

I have a few Magnalite dutch ovens which I wish now I would have bought more of before they stopped making those. I love cooking with those too.

@Lilac I had 4 pieces of cast iron, gave one away. One is a very small fry pan I never use.

The other two are Le Crueset enameled bought on sale. One is an oval dutch oven and the other a covered casserole/saute pan. They are so dang heavy! I have to remove the lids first before I take them out of the oven.

I love the look for the black cast iron hanging like you plan, but so heavy to clean. Do you cook with them often?

I use my cast iron all the time. The other day I just bought the 9 1/2" x 19" griddle that is smooth on one side & grill on the other. I had the square double sided griddle, but it was too small.

I have Le Crueset too & it is heavy, especially with food in it. I put the skillets up, but left out the saucepans & a 2-qt dutch oven. I have a 12-qt. oval that is a monster. I only use it for a few recipes & that's on top of the stove most of the time. I had a 5-qt dutch oven that I burned the inside & couldn't get it cleaned out :(. I'd like to replace it, but they are too expensive right now.

The other cookware I really like is the All-Clad. I wish I would have bought more of the saucepans before they became really expensive.
