Ladies...ever get one of "those" haircuts?

I went to the hairdressers a total of 6 times and only once did I received the hairstyle I really wanted (my hair had suffered damages from prescribed medication). The second time I wanted an easy wash and wear (nope, 2 tonnes of hairspray, which I'm allergic too -- also happened at sibling's wedding -- curlers the lot), turned out after washing my hair was flatter than flat, bummer.

The 4 visits to get exactly my wedding day hair as the bride, were ruined. You specifically tell the hairdresser what you're looking for aka large curls and they give you the wrong perm.

So, after the last disaster after daughter was born, I'd needed a natural wig to let my own hair recuperate and recover. Nowadays, I do my own hair. I've a diamond shaped face and I don't like hair down my back anymore.

As I hit 60 a while back, I've tried an A-Line Haircut and my fringe is angled to curl back up and give lift on top. This video will help if you dare 🙂

Oh no, don't get me started. Hairdressers always manage to do the opposite of what I ask for. I'd go in for a trim, and they'd take it all off. If I complained, they said it would grow back. Yes, I just spent the past year getting it to "grow back."

Or they'd give me a very masculine cut. There are male haircuts and female haircuts, and although they might be similar, even I know the difference.

The worst was when I spent a year growing my hair, and decided to go to a high-end salon for a trim. Finally I'd have nice hair. I went from shoulder length to this. I looked like I had a frying pan on my head.

I wrote a letter of complaint, and the manager wrote back, inviting me to come in and talk to the owner. The owner spent half an hour insulting me and my hair. (I should have left, but I was young.)

So I've been cutting my own hair for decades. Sometimes people compliment me on my hairdo.

To cut your own hair, you need barber scissors. They are fairly expensive. Don't use them for cutting anything else.

I've always had short hair and had great haircuts when we lived in CA. However, when we retired in 2001 and left CA to live in our RV for 3 1/2 years and bum around the country, decent haircuts were a thing of the past for me :(

I always take pictures with me when I'm at a new salon to show them what I want. I very seldom, if ever, get that haircut and then it's a looooong process of growing it out again.

So, when we moved to our current town and got settled in, there happened to be a salon not far from our house, so I went in; took my pictures, and got my hair cut. She did a pretty good job that first time, so, 6 weeks later, I went back for a "trim" (not the same thing as a cut), but she cut it short(er). It took another 6 weeks to just start to grow out again (but out of any style, whatsoever), so I went back. You guessed it....she whacked it off and I came home and my husband was almost speechless...but tactful. It was so short, I looked like a guy! I felt like crying but that wouldn't have helped. It's been 7 weeks and I have an appointment on the 18th but I'm canceling. I may let my hair grow out more and then hubby can trim like he use to do....and he did a good job and it was free :)
I feel this! For me it was a bit different in that I've always had long hair, but had to get it cut off, very short a few months ago due to damage as a result of meds. I was taking (and having bleached it to blue and then green). My peeps really liked the short hair, but I hated it; couldn't find myself in the mirror.

It's slowly (curly at the bottoms) growing out and just now getting to the point that I can clip it up and recognize my own face again. Definitely one of those haircuts for me. Had to be done, yes, but I'll be so much more comfortable when it's where it should be. Getting there...

I love that your husband can trim your hair. :) -- I cut my husband's hair, but I think he'd be uncomfortable trying to do that for me. Okay, I admit I might be a bit uncomfortable with that too. LOL

For trimming, I'll go back to what I was doing before, which is trimming my own bangs, only this time I'll do that only a couple times and then go to the stylist and let her trim my hair and reshape my bangs for me. I'm thinking my hair will stay healtheir that way.

Back when the pandemic started I bought a Wahl clipper for about $100 for the set. Plus a little razor comb and some hair clips. I bought a 2" hair cutting guide as well. I been cutting my own hair for nearly 3 yrs. I get compliments on it. LOL! I refuse to pay hairdressers $20 - $25 to screw up my hair.

EDIT: I watched youtube videos to learn to cut my hair.
I watched youtube videos to learn to cut my bangs. Gotta love youtube.

Not having hair I don't have a problem. Unlike what most seem to be experiencing my wife doesn't have any of the issues posted. About two years into retirement as most of you have experienced my wife was not happy with how her hair was being done. One trip to a walk in hair place for women she was taken care of by a new graduate from beauty school. We found out later that was her 1st. day working there. That graduate listened & did what my wife wanted. My wife made an appointment for 6 weeks later with that same woman. My wife has been with that same woman since then. Zero problems & no need to describe what she wants. That woman quite often tells other customers that my wife was her 1st. customer.

Lots of salon choices nearby. I just returned to the stylist I used before the pandemic hit and am very happy with how she managed my hair.

Having curly hair that looks best with lots of layering, other than barely trimming the bangs every couple of weeks, I don't dare go near my own hair with a pair of scissors.

I haven't had long hair since my 30's. They rarely cut my hair right. And with natural wave, I started cutting mine myself. The wave and slight curl, hide mistakes and I like it doesn't cost me anything. I should probably upgrade from my dollar store scissors though.

Back around my mid-20's, I wanted my hair cut like Jane Fonda's in "Klute". It was sort of a shag cut with
longer sides. My hair was long, past my shoulders. I came out of the salon with short hair, and 2 long, thin
tendrils at the sides. Back then, I wasn't assertive, and said nothing. Couldn't get home fast enough to cut those tendrils. I also had a date that night with a guy who was just a good friend. He arrived right after I "fixed" the hair.

I have long hair, but when I need a trim or to chop 6" or 8" off, no one touches my hair but my daughter. She's not a hairdresser or anything... just knows how I like it. That said, I sure would like to learn to cut it myself, so I will be watching some of those videos.
