Ladies, If Your Purse Was Stolen

I was walking across a parking lot to the store after getting off work across the street and saw a man on a bicycle steal a purse from an elderly woman and she started screaming. The man got off his bike and ran into a bank nearby and disappeared. People went to help her that saw it, too. He knocked her over when he grabbed her purse. I do not know how this turned out.

I usually only care my wallet purse with a small amount of money and one credit card. I do have a cross body purse but mostly just carry the little wallet purse.

hang on I had to read this twice...The robber ran into a bank ?.. didn't anyone go in there after him?

I was walking around a street market alone in Spain one Saturday morning. A very busy, market where you had to literally have eyes in the back of your head, and keep your money hidden...

I was aware that 2 young men were following me everywhere I went, staying about 10 feet behind me.. if I stopped at a stall they stopped at the next one and so it went on half way round the market...the place was packed, and I just thought any minute now they're going to pounce on me, what do I do.. so I did the only thing I could think of to do and I faced them and at the top of my voice I started shouting over and over again. ... Mira el Ladron... Los ladrones... so everyone turned to look at these 2.... and they scurried off shouting obscenties...

I left the scene but I am thinking that he used a restroom or something and changed clothes. It looked like to me he had a wig on. He was strange looking. I do not know if the police came or not. People were caring for this elderly woman who was so upset and laying on the ground. My husband picked me up at the store. This was many years ago.

I try to be careful. When I go shopping šŸ›’ I use my long strap on my purse šŸ‘œ around my neck so it's always very close to me. I was robbed of my purse over 40
years ago.

I was sitting outside at a business establishment. My purse was on my lap but not around my neck and I was not holding onto it. At that time a man ran up to me and before I knew it he grabbed my purse and took off running very fast.

I started running after him but couldn't catch up. I had a little money in there and a comb and a little makeup.

If someone stole my purse now they'd get my ID, Different cards I have for various things, some Kleenex, a pen and paper, my spare keys. I should really put my spare keys somewhere else.

The only time I though that my purse was being stolen was when I was stepping off a curb in Detroit and someone grabbed the shoulder strap and jerked hard.

Time seemed to stop and I started to turn, ready to go full Kung Fu Panda on the snatcher, but it was a policeman, stopping me from jaywalking. One more second, and I would have been hauled in for battery on a police officer.

They probably would feel the weight of my purse and say "Forget it !" They'd get everything but the kitchen sink and not my phone, my license and credit cards, insurance cards or keys. Because I keep those important things in a RFID protected, thin pouch under my outer clothes. Shhhh...don't tell anybody...don't want the thieves to be hip to that and start strip searching people. I carry my phone in my hand or in a pocket and my keys around my neck unless I'm going out with my son. The thief might get my wallet with only a little bit of cash (sometimes less than $10), my Legal Shield card, doctor's business cards, two Atlantic City Jitney tickets, my Costco card as well as other unimportant membership cards.

Southern ladies often refer to their purses at pocket books. Generally they are more like an Encyclopedia Britannica.

SO put an air tag into my purse. I replaced the clicker for his truck on my key ring with a plain key which is a $300 difference. Now the only thing thing of value is my gator credit card wallet which was a present from a great manager.

My ex used to haul around this purse that I swear had lead weights in it. I always teased her about the weight and the junk she kept in it. We were going someplace and there was something wrong with the car, so I pulled over to the side of the road. Whatever was wrong needed a screwdriver (this was 30 years ago), and I didn't have one. When I mentioned I needed a screwdriver, she said she had a tool kit in her purse. But, of course, my teasing about her purse came up, and now, what did I think?. She reaches in her purse and pulls out this tiny plastic case. Inside were tiny plastic tools, the screwdriver was about an inch long- it was like "Barbie's tool kit". "There", she said.

My purse wasn't stolen, but I did leave it a WalMart once. I was lucky to get it back with nothing missing. After that, I keep my driver's license and other items, that would a hassle to try to replace, in the car. Now if I lose track of my handbag, a thief would only get a floppy purse and some money, which would be replenished when I get my pension or SSI.

I used to just take some money in my jean pocket to the store when I lived close enough to walk. One time, I noticed when I returned home, that $20.00 was missing. I thought I must have dropped it in the parking lot, so went back and figured someone would have picked it up, but there it was. After that I decided I did need a small purse or wallet to keep my money in to not have it fall out when putting it in my pocket. I guess having a purse was safer.

Today, taking my little wallet purse into a store, I thought of this thread and how someone could just take it away from me. I must make a better decision whether to use the purse around my body without much in it.

My credit card is the only item I'd worry about. Well, also my phone if it's in the bag. I carry only crossbody bags, as I like the way they free my arms, so I don't worry about purse snatchers. It would be pretty hard for anyone to get the bag without ripping my arm off.

But I've been reading about purses being snatched in restaurants when women hang them on the backs of chairs. I will not hang my purse that way again, after reading that. They can grab the purse and be out the door before you even realize the purse is missing! Just keep it on your lap.

My purse is a Travelon crossbody. Attractive, no. Practical enough for me, since most of the time I’m walking to the store. Travelon and PacSafe make a variety of bags with slash resistant straps and other security features.
Those are the type of purses that I use as well. My wallet is from Travelon too.
I was a city girl and was attacked twice, once in Europe when I was 12 years old, once in NYC when I was 18. I was not hurt and they did not get anything from me. I screamed at the top of my lungs and fought back (most probably in retrospect not the smartest thing to do but fortunately it worked for me.)
I am very careful now when I am out especially as I am aging and become more of a target I also live in a safe and secure area.

and ladies put their bags on the table... easiest thing in the world for snatcher to take it....

The other thing is shopping trolleys ( carts).. I see it all the time, they put the bag in the child seat, then pay no attention to it while they study the cheese...

I remember when we visited Germany, I didn't carry a purse at all. I had everything, including passports & traveler's checks, in the inside zipped pockets of my Barbour. It was easy because it was cool enough that we always needed a coat. I got so used to not having the purse, I didn't like carrying one when we got back to the states.

yes I'm the same, I have my Barbour, and it's great for the capacious pocket space. but of course it's only useful in the winter...I've also got a Parka....

I also have an arm band which has a zip where I can keep money and a card and it's worn under my blouse or jumper... and can't be seen..
