Ladies, If Your Purse Was Stolen

My late wife made pouches for our passports that hung around our necks under our clothes. They would also hold some cash.

Thinking about it, the worst scenario would be if my phone were stolen. If any of my bank cards were used, there’s an alert on the phone. I can shut them down/alert banks from that phone. I have no clue what anyone’s phone number is.

I haven't carried a purse in 15 years or so. I wear men's pants because the pockets are deeper. Wallet, keys, phone. The wallet is in the back pocket, which is supposed to be the easiest to pick. I wear my shirt out; hopefully that makes it harder? Maybe I should relocate it to the front.

I have bank alerts too.

My husband phone & mine are almost identical as far as numbers. His phone lost all of the info a few years ago without warning never to be recovered again. I bought a rolodex, just like what we had our work desk, and put all of our numbers in it for reference. Every so often we download our photos to the computer.

Isn't modern tech so nice, LOL.

Am I the only one who has a carabiner clip strongly hooked to their purse?
It’s become my habit to sit my closed purse in the baby area of the shopping cart and clip the carabiner on one of the bars of the cart. If someone grabs the purse they’re going to be dragging the cart with them. I’m pretty sure that will slow them down.
In a restaurant I loop the strap through a chair leg so if it’s grabbed they’re dragging me and the chair.
These things don’t help when I’m simply carrying it but they probably couldn’t carry the heavy thing.

Police always tell people to carry a wallet in your front pocket never in the back !

Years ago I wanted something that I could lock up valuables in my pick up truck such as my wallet, checkbook, etc. that if someone broke in, they couldn't just grab & run.

This Liberty Safe HD-90 key vault has a security cable that loops around the framework underneath my truck seat & is shoved under it out of sight. I was impressed by this & I bought another for the car which is secured on the rear seat framework & lays inside the trunk. The keys are not your standard key, but are round similar to a vending machine key.

That makes sense. Nothing for the crooks to just snatch and run after they’ve broken into your vehicle. At the local beach parking lots, they have signs saying to not leave anything in your car - locked or not. An alarm in the car anywhere is ignored for enough minutes for the crooks to get away.

I think it's a great idea but what if your car is stolen?

I stopped carrying a purse many years ago.

I went to a fanny pack aka b-i-t-c-h bag if one rode motorcycle, which I did. If someone gets it, they have to cut it off me. I will likely have “gone on to greener pastures”, but not without making a ruckus and someone’s dna under my fingernails.

Your car could be stolen with your wallet/valuables in it even if you just found a hidey-hole to put them in.

Main thing is to do what you can to make your car unattractive to steal. Park in well lighted or high traffic areas. One easy to do thing is just to lock your doors. It's so amazing when I read the police-blotter in the local paper of how many things happen to unlocked cars parked in the owners driveway over night.

Another thing is to use a steering wheel lock. The are "in your face" to a thief when looking inside your car. If you own a Kia or Hyundai, get a steering wheel lock.

I have no idea how much it costs, but we've been thinking of putting a kill-switch in one of the farm tractors we have because we really don't want to loose it.

I know how to prevent my car being stolen...but my point was if you're taking all the precautions of leaving valuables in your car in an essentially safe box.. they're still gone if your car is stolen...

Here's a type of theft that doesn't get mentioned a lot, but it happened to me a few years ago. I was checking out my groceries at one of those check-it-yourself stations, and was stupid enough to be using some of my favorite tote bags instead of the plastic ones you can get at the grocery store for a dollar or less. I rang up the first bag groceries and placed the bag in the cart and continued ringing up more groceries. Someone who must have been very swift and very quiet made off with that first bag, which of course was scanned and listed on my bill. I didn't even notice it was missing, as I had several bags.

When I got home, I realized. What mainly bothered me was not that someone was stealing food (if they needed it that badly, they are welcome to it) but they got my favorite tote bag, which I miss to this day.

So if you do the DIY checkout thing, be careful to keep an eye on your stuff, especially the items that have been rung up. And use cheap plastic bags, not your good tote bags.

You can get similar ones with thumb ID.

You can get similar ones with thumb ID.
Those work with batteries/electric & if you loose power, you loose access. Also, some only allow one person to use them. With keys I don't have to worry about that & my husband & kid can also use it if need be.

The biometric may be better for someone who may have hand issues & using a key.

Yep, that can happen as nothing is foolproof. But a few people here had mentioned leaving wallets in their car & not carrying those on them sometimes depending on the situation. This is just a way to further secure items in the vehicle. What it would do is not make for easy pickens by a thief.

I don't like taking my wallet & leaving it inside the locker any more in the gym after what happened to my husband. Back in the winter, my husband was working out & his things were in a locked locker. When he came back, he found his lock had been cut off, but everything was still inside. He went to the manager & found out he had done.

The reason was some idiot tossed only their keys in the locker & left without putting a lock on it to work out. Hubby didn't see keys & put his bag on top & locked it. Instead of using the PA system to ask people in the gym to come to the locker room to sort it out, they said nothing. So they destroyed a $15 lock & gave him their 99-cent special to replace it. I am still livid over what they did.

What the management could have very caused his wallet & all of his property to be stolen. The key-owner could have walked back & took anything he wanted from that locker knowing what was in there. Did I say that I'm still livid over what they did & how it was handled?

A decent wire cutter will take care of business. But it makes your insurance and ATF happy.

I went out with a woman who only had a small purse with her and while we were sitting in the restaurant at our table, she sat the purse on the table and a young stud ran by and swiped her purse. This woman was very chic and debonair (very sophisticated). I was stunned at what had happened, but before I started to get up out of my seat to chase him, she bolted out of her seat like a Ferrari and the chase was on.

Much to my surprise, or more like shock, she caught him, grabbed her purse and whacked him in the jaw with her elbow. She hit him so hard, it knocked him out for a few minutes and several people had gathered around him while we walked back to the restaurant. I guess that purse meant a lot. Her pants and jacket were fine, but her hair and makeup was kind of a mess, so she excused herself, went to the Ladies Room and came back looking like she had just stepped out of a salon.

I asked her where she learned her maneuvers and she said she taught martial arts for 14 years. I was never afraid to be with her, although San Diego wasn't considered to be a rough place back in the 80's.

So far my neighborhood seems quite safe but only a few miles away people are having their car windows smashed so thieves can gain access. Some have stopped locking their cars to keep from having to replace a window. Its a sad situation either way.

I had the same thing in Spain again... I did say it's crime ridden in many places....sadly...

Car was sitting outside the gated community on the road instead of in the car park.. me just being lazy having it closer to home got up one morning to find they'd smashed the passenger window , after trying to get into the car by trying to prise open the passenger door whch blew the window out ......what a lot of damage they caused, all for the CD player ...it cost me fortunes to have it fixed..
