I much prefer what we in the business call “fixed wings” or airplanes to helicopters. Flying at 35,000+ feet allows the pilot a lot of time to fix a problem before crashing. Flying a helicopter, you don’t have a lot of time to fix a problem before you hit the ground.

As a young pilot, I had a friend that flew for U.S. Air and crashed at LAX while landing. The ATC forgot about a plane she had waiting to take off and gave my friend’s plane clearance to land. When he landed his plane, he landed his plane on top of the plane waiting to take off.

They said Kobe frequently traveled by helicopter because he hated traffic (like me). He was one of the few private people who was permitted to land on the roof of the Ritz Carlton near the Staples Center.
Sometimes wealth causes more problems than it solves & makes life riskier. Like John Denver & his plane, if Kobe was a regular working person, he couldn't have afforded his own helicopter & he would have had to drive to work. I also remember an interview with him when he was around 23 & he just bought a Ferrari & took the reporter for a ride in it. He said, "Driving this car is like being strapped into a rocket." I was thinking, "Hmmm, youth, lots of money, & fast cars can be a dangerous combination."

So saddened by this.....the world has truly lost one of the greats of basketball....my 12 year old granddaughter is very upset....she plays b-ball and watches NBA games all the time....she will now understand more of the truth of how all humans pass on when their time is up in no uncertain way, shape, form or age :(

So very sad. :( RIP Kobe, GiGi and friends. The clip I just saw of the two of them courtside recently made me bawl. He was explaining something about the game to her (who was a rising young basketball star in her own right) and you could see so much love between them.

Off topic (Sorry) - Do helicopters even have a glide ratio?

They are reporting that 9 people perished in the crash, and it was in a remote area where rescue team members had to hike in to get to the scene of the crash.
Apparently, Kobe Bryant was just proclaimed dead in one of those internet “death hoaxes” over the weekend, and there was already a RIP Facebook page set up for him, because so many people thought that he had already died.
Another strange thing, is one of those cartoons that seem to predict the future, and this one shows Bryant being in a helicopter crash. It is on Twitter if you want to watch the whole clip of the cartoon depiction.

That's really strange. When I heard the news tonight about his death and his daughter my heart broke. His poor wife and other child, what a lose for them and the others whose life's were lost in the crash. May they all RIP.

The update is more horrific than the original story. Very saddened to read that his young daughter, as well as more victims than originally thought were also lost. I can't imagine what her mother and sibling are going through right now. The cartoon "prediction" is really eerie. I wonder if it can be accessed other than Twitter? I don't have an account. Lots of people have been death hoax victims but now his is ironic.

I belong to a FB page that was set up after the Camp Fire in Paradise last year. They report on weather, fires and other events all over California. I saw their report this morning that there was a helicopter crash near Calabasas and (at that time),they said that all 5 passengers were killed. I actually misread it at first that it was a medical helicopter and mentioned it to my husband, then corrected myself and said it was "just" a copter crash. Wasn`t for another hour or so that they reported it was Kobe Bryant. And then his daughter as well. My heart is with his wife and three other girls tonight. What a tough one to get through. And,of course,I feel so badly for all the others and their families.

Many famous celebrities have perished in air accidents. Scary and slow way to die when you know all is wrong in the helicopter.
I didn't realize how often until I did a bit of research after one of my favorite musicians - Jim Croce was killed in his plane.
