The 2008 movie Valkyrie starred Tom Cruise as Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, the man who first approached von Kleist about the plot to kill Hitler on July 20, 1944.

After the assassination attempt had failed von Kleist was arrested, questioned by the Gestapo and, inexplicably, released to return to combat duty. After the war von Kleist founded a publishing house and became a consultant on security matters, later founding the Society for Military Studies, the European Military Studies magazine and the annual Munich Security Conference, which continues to this day.

von Kleist had been awarded the U.S. Department of Defense's Medal for Distinguished Public Service as well as Germany's Federal Order of Merit and France's Officier de la Legion d'Honneur.
