Last time you traveled locally on public transportation

yes, it's annoying - I had that free travel for all of 4 months between turning 60 and moving out of London. Also have the rail pass, which paid for itself when I was doing a lot of touring around but not more recently.
 

After yesterday receiving an approval letter from the California BAR Vehicle Retirement program. I needed to take my old car to an auto dismantler. So this morning looked at the county public transportation map and noted I could take a single bus from an auto wrecker lot to get back home. Thus drove my 2007 Forester with 281k miles for the last time to a local Pick 'n Pull wrecker where after about 90 minutes received a $1350 check from the state spit out from a printer.

Well, the VTA route on the map had changed that I could have found out about if I had bothered to look at the special route info page. After walking a mile to a supposed bus stop that wasn't there, got the attention of a local resident that pointed me to another street a half mile away. The bus trip itself with many stops was especially slow. That included walking 2.5 miles to/from bus stops with outdoor temperature about 88F.
 

I haven't taken a city bus in a long time. After my husband passed, I used to only have to do so to get to and from doctor appointments if my son or grandson couldn't transport me. Now I use Ubers and/or Lyfts instead. I do however, take the train to go to the Hoboken/Jersey City, N.J. waterfront park and it's a nice, relaxing ride. Since I buy my tickets in the New Jersey Transit app, I know that the last time was October 23, 2024. I can't believe it's been that long!! The price had just gone up to $3.55 one way for seniors (used to be $3.00).

I also take the casino bus to go to Atlantic City...not for the gambling, but to stay at our timeshare. The price for a round trip ticket went up to $50 from $45. It does include a casino slot bonus of $30. I do use my bonus, but don't put another dime into those slots. Last time I went was also in October of last year.
 
I shall use public transport on Tuesday into Wollongong CBD to see my specialist, saves the hassle of parking. Will probably take the train in and then, depending on the timing, the bus home. The train takes about 10 minutes, the bus about half an hour but drops me off closer to home.

My seniors Opal card has a maximum charge of $2.50 a day so that is what it will cost me. Works for bus, train, light rail or ferry.
 
I used public transportation exclusively when I lived in Brookline, Mass. The "T" cost 80 cents, including transfers to go from one place to another. The stop was 2 blocks from my house. I loved the T ... I could go anywhere in Boston to explore, and have a ride home. That was the last time I lived anywhere that had public transportation. Mostly I used it to go to grad school and back. I explored areas of the city before I caught the T to go back home.

It did gross me out one day, when I looked down on the tracks and saw a lot of rats running around. Thank goodness they didn't have wings! These were wild rats, of course. I got over my fear of pet rats when I met a lady who had a pet rat and persuaded her to let me hold him. I carried him around her house for half an hour and he was a right nice fella. So I'm no longer afraid of pet rats. He was cuddly.

After that, rat lady asked me to take care of her Clydesdale stallions (6) and her miniature horses. She was a lady of extremes. I had never taken care of a horse in my life. Although I was willing to learn, my husband put his foot down due to the danger he perceived in me doing that. I think he was right, but at the time I was a bit irritated that I couldn't learn something new and have an adventure. The Clydesdales were a whole lot bigger than me, so they were at bit scary. Plus my whole family was with me and I had to cover my little girl's eyes. Clydesdales don't wear underwear.

Age and health are having a real impact on our travel. My health is good for my age but my wife is having a more difficult time. In the past we traveled to Hawaii a couple times a year as well a other places involving long flights or driving distances. I request the assistance of a wheelchair for movement in airports because of the long walking distances, and build in layovers that allow time to eat and relax. Driving long distances now involves more frequent stops to stretch legs and relax a bit.

I also bought a transport chair about like they use in the airports and that allows us to visit venues like Christmas light displays, sports events or just browsing in a mall. I can use this in an airport and have them check it at the gate. Its a bit of trouble and we wait when exiting a flight to avoid being an encumberance to fellow travelers. The downside of these things is that my wife realizes that these accomodations are more for her benefit than mine. In the end I still think it is worth using alternate methods as opposed to being homebound.
 
Last time for me was probably 2015?
I’m too spoiled by my car. Even for airport runs in NYC, I skip the trains entirely. Too much chaos.

So in such cases, I use Transfeero for those trips because they show up on time and I don't have to squeeze into a crowded carriage. Much better for my sanity!
 
For me it was late November I caught the train from about 70 K's from home. It was the day that I sold a bike, the buyer didn't have a valid licence for a full size motorcycle so I delivered it.
 
Last Sunday. We went to my sister. Normally we take a bus, then 2 trains and they pick us up there with the car, but now it was cold and the first train didn't go further. Wait half an hour. First see a packed train leave in front of your nose. Wait for the next. Go to the other place! Everybody runs. Yes! We have a seat. Call my sister. We're there in 15 minutes. 5 minutes later: The train doesn't go. Get out. So my nephew drove 20 mins extra to pick us up luckily.

No public transportation around here....but the last time would be probably early 90's....my friend and I would park at a parking terminal outside the airport, ride a bus to the airport and fly out.

We were only ones on train who paid surrounded by homeless.
most try it once or twice but the parking lots to ride are too small. A few months ago, a few big events happening in big city south of here over 100 cars impounded because they parked on private property thinking it was the light rail lot.

line is years behind and over budget and recently found only about 40 percent even pay the fares. and some sections smell from the homeless making them home or a bathroom. YUK
 
I don't own a vehicle and I don't take public transportation a regular basis, even though I'm in a transportation hub. One reason is because I'm in a neighborhood where the walk score is 98%. I'm close to financial institutions, restaurants, retail stores and sometimes even entertainment. I only need to find alternate means of transportation when going to doctor appointments if my son or one of my honorary children can't take me. I got tired of waiting for buses that ran late, got detoured (without my knowledge) and didn't come to my stop at all, or having to wait in the elements.

After my husband passed, I started using Ubers and Lyfts. They usually come within a couple of minutes, really aren't that expensive (compared to what maintaining a car would cost) and I like the convenience. The only time I take public transportation anymore is when I take the casino bus to Atlantic City (to go to our timeshare). It only makes 5 stops after the one I get on at. I also take the train to the Hoboken/Jersey City (N.J.) waterfront parks on the Hudson River (N.Y.) as many nice days as I can. Last time was to A.C. at the beginning of October.

couple of weeks ago
bus
suburb into centre of city
zero - I have a seniors card so it was free
about 20 minutes
parking costs/ don't like driving in urban traffic.
 
since becoming an adult?? - I have used tramcars in HK -[where I also lived] - the famous tramcars in San Fransisco ; what was the topic title again?? - oh yes - numerous taxis both in HK; OZ and less so in UK - trains ; buses in UK ; phew I'm gettin tired! british rail in Uk - underground rail in London and HK ; planes small and large - I am lucky to be alive really??

Not for a very long time, and, let me tell you, the Deadwood Stage is bloody uncomfortable. 😊
 
The last time I travelled on public transportation was last year. My mother in law died and we needed to go and help the rest of family so needed to take the ferry across to Newfoundland. We took the ferry Christmas Eve and landed in Newfoundland Christmas Day. There were so few people that it was actually an enjoyable ride.

This person just used my SFBA Senior Clipper Card today for a few miles Light Rail ride that subtracted just $1 from my account. My vehicle is in a shop being serviced. Will need to use it again Wednesday to pick the car up. More often, I use SFMTA to get around San Francisco.

Last Tuesday, I caught the bus to the eye specialist because they were going to use the drops that dilate the pupil. I used my Seniors' Opal card. The trip was in Wollongong, was approximately 6km in each direction and took about 15 minutes each way

The return trip cost me $2.50 ie I hit the daily limit for a pensioner.
