Less coffee More water

A Quiet American
Trying to build more hydration into my daily routine. It’s not always easy: a Starbucks on every corner, offering flavorful “liquid ambition,”— and the tendency to feel queasy if I drink a lot of water at one time. But my muscles and joints feel better when I hydrate. So I’m trying to drink more H2O first thing in the AM and intentionally reach fir the water before the coffee or tea.

What are ways you have found to keep hydrated?

I dont hardly drink coffee 'when I do my online shopping list I add 16 small bottles of
sparkling water as I find the still water is hard to take ………...but good idea to cut the caffeine down..

I always drink water when I wake up. I have a dry mouth problem. I have a big salad as a meal once/day, along with 2-3 fruits. In the summer, I always take a vacuum canister of water when I'm out.
I've heard coffee can dehydrate. I also like coffee. I have 2 mugs/day & I ain't givin' that up.

I always drink a glass of warm water with a slice of lemon in the morning, refill the glass and keep it topped up to sip throughout the day, only ever have one cup of coffee a day and three mugs of tea, sometimes a little fruit juice

You might want to try some good green tea. Here's where I buy mine. It's much better than the supermarket stuff, and it's very low in caffeine and high in ant-oxidants. I bought one of their sample packs and found I prefer the dragon well long jing. I fix a cup with 2 grams of tea in the morning and get two more cups from the same leaves later in the day. I save it in this little porcelain gaiwan I got on Ebay.

I got the glass cup at Dollar Tree.

Nope, drink coffee (decalf & leaded) and water, too. Coffee does hydrate you and is more of a "food" with healthy antioxidents - great doses of potassium and other healthy ingredients. Clinical studies have shown positive health advantages:

  • Does coffee dehydrate you?
    • A Harvard study recently compared the hydration effects of drinking water and coffee, and found very little difference. Coffee does have a mild diuretic effect, but this effect is reduced in regular coffee drinkers since they build up a tolerance, giving coffee a great ability to hydrate as well as wake you up.

I'm guilty of not drinking enough water. Don't even think about doing it. I drink two cups of coffee in the morning, a bottle of diet soda during the day, a glass of water for one meal and a glass of milk in the evening with a snack. But it isn't enough. I just get busy doing stuff throughout day and don't think about drinking more water.

Water is my beverage of choice. I have reusable water bottles filled and in the refrigerator because I like my water cold. I can go through 7 to 9, 12 oz. bottles per day. I only drink 2 cups of coffee per day. One in the morning and one in the evening. Very rarely drink soda. Occasionally iced tea or pink lemonade in the summer. If I work outdoors, a bottle of water goes with me.

I have never been a fan of coffee or tea. Hot or cold. But I love my water. I will drink it plain or flavored. A couple flavor options are the Orange Crush flavor packets for water. A pricer option is the Hint bottled water. I like the watermelon or strawberry kiwi. The hint is more expensive, so I often will just have a few bottles on hand as a to go option.

I drink black coffee, unsweetened iced tea, and iced tap water all day long when I'm home.

It's just a habit for me but I think that hydration and flushing of the system have some health benefits.

Ruthanne makes a great point that eating fresh fruits and vegetables contributes a good amount of liquid that we don't normally think about.

On tree jobs, in the summer, I can down eight bottles in four hours. No hitting the head, as I sweat it all out. At home, I drink five glasses a day, on average, during colder weather.

Close proximity to a wood stove in the winter, I always have a mug of water, cold fresh well water. I don't count them , I just refill it as needed. Sometimes some lemon in it.
These days I limit coffee to 2 cups in the morning.

I hate plain water and can't even tolerate a teaspoon of lemon juice because it gives me stomach cramps.
I drink Walmart's light apple juice mixed with diet ginger ale. The apple juice contains very little calories and isn't overly sweet. I know soda isn't good but it is better than being dehydrated.

I drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning and the rest of the day enjoy my apple juice.

I have to drink 64 ozs. of water a day because of kidney stones, I use to gag on it, now I add either lemon or lime to my bottles of water n it’s much better.
I am having to contend with kidney stones these days and have increased my water consumption quite a bit. I also added a 10 oz glass of water with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Drinking it involves overcoming the gag reflex, but I agree with the folks who believe that the vinegar helps dissolve the stones or at least make them a bit smaller.

What other things are you doing to deal with this? This particular problem only surfaced about 4 weeks ago so I am new to this. I have cut out spinach, reduced the amount of red meat I eat, and added a banana every day.

I drink a lot of water every day, although I also drink coffee. I am so lucky because Independence, MO has had their water rank in the top 10 world-wide 7 out of the last 8 years. Water from the tap is just like buying bottled water!

I have found that as one begins to drink more water each day it becomes easier to increase the volume ingested. So keep drinking water and just try to increase it a little bit each day. When your pee is light yellow you will know that you have drank enough.

I drink 2 cups a coffee every morning and sometimes that is all. Some days I have herbal teas also. I try to remember to drink water and have post it notes all over the place reminding me. I make 2 pitchers of ice tea every few days and drink some tea most days. I have a water cup that keeps my water cold and I sip it through out the day if I remember. In Chinese medicine the doctor will ask you if you are a thirsty person who drinks or a thirsty person who doesn't. I am trying to eat better and that includes drinking more water.

I wish I had seen your question before, sorry. I have only had one kidney stone 10mm it caused a lot of trouble so the only thing I have changed is drinking the water which I never drank before. I did give up soda but I never changed my food, tho I don’t eat a lot of beef. Good luck!

I think our bodies have a pretty good system - when we need more liquid, we crave water. Other than several cups of decaf coffee each morning and a few cups of weak herbal tea in the evening, I only drink when I'm thirsty. Which isn't all that often.

It seems so odd that over the past 25 years many humans have come to imagine something terrible will happen to them if they don't force fluids.
