Let's Discuss Lucid Dreaming

My interest in Lucid Dreaming is expanding. I'm doing lots of reading and research on the subject. So far I haven't achieved lucidity in my dreams but I know it's only a matter of time. Is there anyone else on this forum who is interested in or has had lucid dreams? I'd like to start a discussion on the subject.

Due to the fact that I never quite make it to REM no, I have never had a lucid dream.
Lack of REM sleep can lead to serious health issues. Could it be that you're just not remembering your dreams and associating it with lack of REM?

Not I... but my daughter has them. She tells herself within a dream things like "I don't want this to happen, so since it's a dream, I'll wake myself up now"... and "I really wish this wasn't just a dream!" I think it's neat, but hasn't happened for me yet.

No, I used to dream and remember some of my dreams. I just don't do that any longer. I have talked to my doctor and am trying something new so hopefully it will help. Yes, it affects you both physically and mentally.

What exactly is Lucid Dreaming?
From WebMD:
Lucid dreams are when you know that you’re dreaming while you’re asleep.
You’re aware that the events flashing through your brain aren’t really happening. But the dream feels vivid and real. You may even be able to control how the action unfolds, as if you’re directing a movie in your sleep.

I have very detailed and colorful dreams, have had them for years. Not every night of course, but I consider myself a dreamer. My husband rarely remembers his dreams.

I have had lucid dreams in the past, not lately. In the dreams there is usually something strange or threatening going on, luckily those dreams are few and far between. In the dream I acknowledge I'm only dreaming and everything will be okay. I talk to myself in my mind in the dream to reassure myself. Soon I awaken. I'm glad I've been able to do that. I have never purposely tried to have lucid dreams, they just happen when they do.

Like in the movie Vanilla Sky, it can be something like a nightmare?

You do have some control. Your thoughts dictate what you perceive in your dream. You bring on the nightmare. You can disarm the nightmare by thinking positive thoughts like love and appreciation. The lion attacking you will turn into a pussycat. Also you can wake up at any time.

I understand they're extremely vivid and lifelike. There are no restraints. You can go anywhere or do anything you want by just imagining it.

I have had lucid dreaming to the point where if I am attempting to make a point in said dream, I continue it while waking up. It takes me a few minutes to convince myself it was only a dream. Now that is truly weird, and something we did not discuss about dreams in my psych classes.

I've heard that you can tell if you're dreaming if you look in a mirror. If you're awake you can see yourself. If you're dreaming you can't see your face in the mirror. Don't know if it's true, but when I'm dreaming I know who the people are but I don't think I really see their faces.

I also don't know if this has anything to do with lucid dreaming...sorry.

I've read that there are many different ways to tell if you are dreaming or awake. Trying to read or tell time can be difficult if you are dreaming. poking your finger into the palm of your hand is another way. If you are dreaming it will go deep in or even poke through the other side.

Being devoted to meditation for years, I often was "aware" of what I was dreaming and sometimes felt like there was no difference between being awake or having the dream. Sometimes I would get caught up in some melodrama, and many times wake up in the dream and tell myself it was all an illusion...usually that was within minutes of walking up. Sometimes my dreams were a bit synchronistic with my life's activity. People and circumstances would be played out in bizarre ways with the people and places I was involved with. That affected my relationships and view of life.

That happens to me but unless I write it down it soon vanishes.

I've had a couple of them where I'm flying in the air, I don't think about how or why, but I know it's a dream and to enjoy it to the max. Usually flying over beautiful outdoor landscapes or colorful flower fields, etc. I can control to slow it down and enjoy, or go faster for a thrill.

Same here.

I can't say I can control it but it has happened to me. Typically it will be a dream I've had before and I will tell myself it's a dream, I will narrate the dream but never change the dream, I will tell myself what is going to happen or why something is happening. That part of the dream always seems very brief and seems to happen right before I wake up so I always assume I was already coming out of deep sleep.

I haven't decided how much of this is just a mundane reality and how much is wishful occultish thinking. And I've given it thought off and on for decades.

But I don't puff out my chest with my thumbs under my suspenders claiming to be superior as a lucid dreamer.
