I've seen it said that the One-Child Policy is one of the worst crimes against humanity ever committed.
And yet ...
Is it any better to over-populate the world so that those same children must endure a long, suffering death? Which is better - to end a life early or to stretch it out and fill it with starvation and despair?
Of course the answer is, neither. But in a world that is rapidly approaching the point where it can no longer sustain a constantly-growing population, isn't the logical answer some type of birth control? Why should families living in a tenement apartment in NYC have 10 kids, all paid for by the State, and not a word is said though they will undoubtedly become just another burden to the system, while an attempt, no matter how ham-handed it proves to be, to control a booming population and keep it in line with available resources is seen as something horrible?
I think that if China were to drop the methods, but not the intent, of the One-Child Policy they might well prove to be an example for many other countries to follow. Eliminate the profit motive - millions of dollars a year in fines - offer a sane alternative, and you will eliminate the horror.
