Listen to Irma. Scary.

I can't imagine 10 or 12 hours of that!

In my area we have some bad storms with straight-line winds that approach 100MPH but they only last a short time.

I'm not sure I could deal with huddling in the dark listening to that for such a long time wondering what was happening around me.

I have no desire to spend my golden years in Florida, I'll stick with the snow!!!

YES!!!!! Aunt Be a
At least when our snow storms hit,we can huddle in a warm house after raiding the stores of course for milk, bread, icecream ,cookies, lol
Snow is quiet too and pretty

We sat through the remnants of a large hurricane in N. Carolina, in 1966. That was enough to convince us that we didn't want to live anywhere near an area where these storms can develop. I'll take a couple weeks of extreme heat in the Summer, and some bitter cold in Jan/Feb, instead of flirting with these coastal disasters. Retirement should be a time to enjoy life, rather than risking everything to a storm.

Pappy that video is so frightening, I can't imagine what it must be like out there, following the news and thinking of you all

Terrifying indeed. Sounded like lost souls. Whew, earthquake country seems safer to me right now. At least it is a seldom occurrence which affects a relatively small area.

Earthquake country is only a safer place to be if you are not in a danger zone for a large quake. Apparently , military in Washington State are conducting more drills in preparation for the high magnitude earthquake that has been expected on the Pacific Coast for a while now.
Earlier this year, they had earthquake drills that went all of the way into Idaho, Oregon, and maybe even Montana; because when the "big one" hits the west coast, rescue workers will be coming from a long ways away.
The large quake would probably go all the way up and down the coastline, and major roadways would be ruined; so this quake will affect more than just a small area.
Vancouver is under the same quake threat, so it is possible that Canada might be having extra drill right now, too, Shalimar.

interesting video. Of course at some point the big quake will hit. Could be tomorrow, could be fifty years from now. Obviously,
different experts project a variety of possible scenarios. My point was, there is a distinct difference in living in an area where hurricanes are expected yearly, and living in an area which has not experienced a severe earthquake in living memory. At this point, I am far more likely to be in a car accident, according to Canadian experts.

It seems like they have been telling us that a lot of the quake-prone areas are overdue for a large quake. I have read the same thing about the New Madrid quake zone being overdue for another large quake like happened back around the early parts of the 1800's, and there is always talk about the Yellowstone caldera erupting.
I can remember my mom telling me that she had read about the West Coast having a large quake (and maybe falling into the ocean in places) way back in the early 1960's; and hopefully, you are right and are not going to have any severe quakes.
However, they have been preparing and doing a lot more drills for one in Washington; so it doesn't hurt to at least be prepared somewhat in case one does happen.
Be safe out there, Shali ! !
