The article does not say, but this is highly likely to be a ransonware attack.
For those that don't know, ransonware is code that encrypts all data on a computers hard disc. It is then password protected, and only the "hackers" know what that password is. The hackers will then contact the hospital and ask for money in return for the password.
This software is available to buy on the Dark Web, and frankly just about anyone could do such a thing. However, this is mostly done by groups of people. This software can by triggered by either gaining access to the business (through flaws in security), or simply by sending everyone in the hospital an infected email and hoping one of them click on it. If they do - everyone in infected.
Why do it? Money, of course. There have been some high-profile cases going back years. And when I'm talking money, I'm talking A LOT of money.
Apex America paid $7m.
JBS paid $22.5m.
CNA paid $60m.
In other words, this is big business. The average payout if $250K
The vast majority of ransomware groups are out of Russian, but not all.
