Look what I found today in the Salvation Army store.

It has been doing nothing but raining off and on in New Jersey. The humidity is absolutely terrible. I decided to go to my favorite store, the Salvation Army. First I go to the back of the store and drop off a box of items I no longer need or want. Then I go inside and buy all new stuff. The hubby says I'm making no headway at all. He is right. lol

Today I found these mugs. I need more mugs like I need a hole in the head but what are the chances of finding these. They were new with the tags still on. They were selling them formug front (800x600) (2).jpgmug back (800x600).jpg 50 cents each! Our Grand kids call us Oma and Opa. I just couldn't leave them there.

Great find!

You'll have much more than a dollar's worth of fun with them!

I do the same thing when I hit the thrift shops drop a little off and try to bring a little less home, it's cheap entertainment!

Can't beat the price Applecruncher and probably better quality as well. Sometimes I find clothes with labels I would never be able to afford to buy and they last forever.
Good find, Ruth! Reminds me I need to make a trip to my favorite thrift shop. I broke several drinking glasses past few months and now I buy my glasses at thrift shop - 59 cents each! :)

How nice! A good find is always a good feeling. My last SA purchase was also a coffee mug, 70's I'm sure. Like new. I too have plenty but they don't make them like that anymore so I buy them when I see them. Can't just leave them there! I paid one dollar however.

Those mugs are great!
Reminds me to carve out an afternoon to finally go check out the huge GWill store that was opened here a year ago...
The one thing that can't be ordered online is the experience of wandering through and finding great labels and brand new fabric in a thrift store :D

Unique and pretty mugs Ruth! I did the same thing. My daughter is trying so hard to purge everything I don't need from the house/attic and has taken multiple carloads of stuff to Goodwill including books.

Last weekend I drove the dogs to the park and stopped at a garage sale on the way. I bought an antique book with a pretty binding for $1 and some sparkly puppy bows for Bella. The antique book looks nice on the shelf but I'll never read it..."Don Quixote":D. My daughter was actually a good sport about it.

Those Oma/Opa mugs were waiting for Ruth's rainy day :)

I recently found a nice newish leather Fossil women's wallet at a local thrift store for $3.

Before that, I found two nice newish oversized men's leather wallets for less than $2 each.
One is marked France... the other is marked made in Spain.

Before that, I bought a nice oversized men's leather wallet at an estate sale for $1.
After I got home, I noticed a full book of unused forever stamps in a hidden compartment.
This wallet is unique... it has "Louis Rukeyser - Wall Street Club" embossed on the outside.

As you can tell, I collect wallets. At least they don't take up much room.

They are really sweet! There is a thrift store here called Savers & I've found some little treasures there. They have huge selection of new & classic paperbacks very inexpensive & every kind of cookbook imaginable. Since I'm down to a one BR at now ( not counting things stored at daughters) try to follow self imposed rule if something comes in, something else goes out.

I love thrift shop treasures. For me it's a cheap date.
I think it's a good rule that if one comes in, one goes out.
I've tried to get more selective and not just get things because of the price. My rule is "would I buy this at a regular store?" If yes then it's a good buy.
Ruth I think those mugs are great!

Ruth,

I thought of you today when I was prowling around the thrift shop.

I picked up a cookbook, a small covered pyrex casserole and then I spied a treasure!

An 11" signed Waterford crystal Lismore Castle, Romance of Ireland, vase similar to this one. My heart sank a little when I examined it and found two tiny chips in the rim where I'm sure someone clunked it against the faucet. The chips make it worthless to a collector but for $3.99 plus tax, I will not be afraid to use it and enjoy it.

The question now is where to put it, LOL!!!

Repeat after me: "Two elephants for a quarter is not a bargain if you don't really really need two elephants!" :playful: :eek:nthego:

oil (800x600).jpgAunt Bea, that is just beautiful. I'm sure you will find a nice place for it. No one is going to notice the chips unless you point them out especially with some flowers in it. A cookbook and a Pyrex casserole! you were on a roll. lol I went today also because Wednesday is seniors day. I found a nice size container with a plastic top. I think it is for brandy and definitely not valuable but I needed something short that will fit in my kitchen cabinet to hold my cooking oil . $1.00. I think we both did very well. Lets see what we find next week.lol

Maybe other members would like to show off their finds.

A few days ago, at our local Salvation Army thrift store I bought a nice vintage [40s/50s] double strand V-shaped rhinestone necklace for $5.

I've found the thrift shops a wonderful place for buying glasses, mugs, serving dishes, etc. I have some beautiful crystal wine glasses with delicate etchings; they must have cost a fortune originally. They cost
$1 each.

Also got a nice summer purse which looks and feels brand new for about $5. My latest bargain from our thrift shop is a men's summer shirt. I needed it as a costume for the upcoming Pirates of Penzance production I am in. I play a girl in the first act, and a (male) police sergeant in the second. The cops are wearing light blue shirts and black pants. (And Keystone Cops helmets). The black pants I had, of course, but where was I going to get a men's
shirt cheap enough to use as a costume? It's been years since my husband passed away, and his shirts would have been much too big anyway.

So I headed for the thrift shop and found a perfect light blue shirt, cool and short sleeved, fits perfectly, for $5.49!

Today, I stopped by an antique store and bought a spectacular pair of huge 50's clip-on earrings (waaay too spectacular for me to wear but the grandbabies will delight in them) that must have cost a fortune. Also bought my mother (who is a hat fanatic) a French black velvet vintage tam-type but more structured hat that she will absolutely love. I bought an antique set of black-and-white postcards from Capri for my sister who just came back from Capri and now wants to go "Italian". I'm saving those for Christmas. And I bought a dynamite fake-pearl necklace that absolutely screams Jackie O/Mad Men for another sister. $21 and a good hour of entertainment.

Today at the local thift store I resisted buying a beautiful 40s/50s rhinestone bracelet that matches the necklace I bought previously.

But I might return tomorrow and buy it [if it's still there.]

Oh I got a gift like that RR. A lady gave me this nice plate with fruit on it. I love the plate and use it to put fruit on! What else!

I heard of a lady who buys thrift store platters and dinner plates of any kind as long as cheap and uses them to put gifts of homemade cookies on for friends and relatives.

What a great idea for those who give backed goods as gifts. I'm afraid in my case the cookies would be gone before it's time to take the gift to the intended party. Still really something to think about.
