Living out in a somewhat rural area a past time is watching the wildlife and their habits as well as personalities of some.
My neighbor and I watch and share feeding birds and squirrels (her the squirrels, myself the birds)
We noticed the beginning of the mating rituals start in the squirrel kingdom this past week. The chasing, the tumbling the female getting ticked and barking at him to JUST LET ME EAT. One set dubbed Romeo and Juliette mainly where the most active.
Right here on my tree next to my porch I witnessed Romeo finally find the right moment.
The day after that, today, I see the feral cat creeping across the street and I knew, I quickly stepped off the steps but I was too late.
I began banging on the fence but the cat just glanced up at me with poor Romeo in his teeth and he quickly sped across the street Romeo swinging
with the movement.
Alas Poor Romeo, your day has come but your memory may live on in about 2-3 months.
A moment of silence please>

She feeds them cheap apples, they love them and good for them too...less mess another plus
I loved watching them. One day three of them sat on the wooden feeder that the previous renter had nailed to the tree. It had rained and it fell off with them on it. I heard something and opened the door and all three of them were looking at it like what the heck? LOL! I couldn't fix it so I had to throw it away and one of them was standing there like a meerkat looking like he was thinking where's she going with our dinner plate?

They are so funny to watch. I had a war with them to keep them out of my birdfeeders. I sat watching them on the tree staring at the feeders calculating which angle, what force and where to aim to get to that tree. They are fun to watch for sure. Now they drinking my hummingbird juice like it's wine

i put the new feeder on the porch one day and my screen door is tinted glass from another renter. i sat on the other side of the glass and was able to watch them up close. one of them sat in front of me at the door and i don't know if he could see me or if he was just curious. it was neat til one of them got nasty with the others. then i went out and put it back in the tree.

The UK's red squirrel is all but extinct. Their demise was due to the introduction and subsequent invasion of the non-native grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) in the late nineteenth century, which ousted the smaller, native species from its homeland territories. As well as being bigger and able to store more fat to see them through leaner winters, the grey squirrel also carries the Squirrel pox virus to which the red squirrel has no immunity. Today red squirrels only survive in areas surrounded by water. We have them not to far away on Brownsea Island.

Hmmm, cat's eat squirrels...🤔 I don't see many feral cats around here, the Coyotes are probably controlling the feral cat population.

We have legions of ground squirrels, eating everything that's remotely edible, hence no vegetable gardens or flowers possible. 😒

There way too many of them here for this area and more soon to come evidently. I had a heck of a time outsmarting them on my seed feeders. Cute to watch but man can they be destructive to other things.

I feed un-salted peanuts to the squirrels in wintertime when the bears are asleep. They are often on sale for $5 a large bag at the super market.
I did that in Virginia got one squirrel to come as close to 2 inches to me to take it but she just couldn't do it. The jaybirds would scream at me when the peanut bins went dry.
