Love yourself

Are there any negative connotations to the concept of "loving oneself" ?

I remember being told, well more than once, that "if you don't love yourself no one can love you".

I always thought that view a little harsh, but never mind that for now, (as its only my view), so what do you think of the exhortation to "love oneself"?

Happy new year BTW.

Love is a little strong. "Like oneself" is better, imo. :) Loving yourself doesn't necessarily mean you are a good person.

So I don't buy it, ie, "If you don't like yourself no one can love you".

If you don't like yourself, at least you must recognize some faults. That's not a bad thing.

Does that make sense? (And I haven't even started celebrating yet.) LOL!

Happy New Year, grahamg!

I've behaved a bit like a "wuss" and taken to my bed rather than going out to the local pub for new year with a mate, but "its my age you know :D !"

The "rule" as stated to me was that "you must love yourself, or else no one can love you" (though I prefer your interpretation).

What a way to start the new year, but I hope you do have a good celebration, and I'm putting mine on hold a little ready for a birthday celebration party next weekend.

In the bible it says love your neighbour as (you love) yourself.

From memory loving yourself in this context means taking care of yourself, not neglecting the things that you require for good health and a fulfilling life. So loving someone else would mean being concerned about them and helping them to care for themselves too.

On the other hand people who don't love themselves tend to be reckless and self destructive and there isn't much anyone else can do to save them. They tend to give up and detach.

That's how I feel also!

Be proud of your achievements and doing things properly
without boasting or bragging about anything that you do.

That would be my take on it.

Mike.

As a youngster I was told that if you love yourself too much you might go blind... now you are telling me that it's okay!!? :D

I was told that too, but it turns out it was "an old wives tale", so we needn't have worried too much :D !

Tying a couple of thread together now (if no one minds), do you think those people diagnosed with a serious mental health condition (like being a psychopath, or sociopath perhaps), love themselves?

Many folks can't stand those who brag about themselves a lot, but my father said it didn't worry him too much (though he did once or twice brag about how popular he was, and his brother said "it was true, everywhere he went people always told him how much they liked my father).

My feelings would tend to be more like yours generally I must say, and overly assertive or controlling people I don't warm to either, though I admire those with "inner confidence".

Thankfully, I didn't "go blind", but I have needed glasses later in life?? Could there be a connection??:holymoly:

This gag could run and run (hopefully).

I remember the biology teacher at my old school telling us boys we need not worry about all the stories concerning going blind, or whatever terrible fate awaited us.

What I want to know is why those people making up such negative fears think they were doing, or was it just a case of Chinese whispers, where nobody challenges what they've been told  ?
