Is there a surprise here? Constant dumping on the police for the last six weeks, including calls for the outright abolition of police departments. Pitched battles with the police every night. Many cops retiring, quitting, calling in sick, or silently vowing not to extend themselves in any way to protect people who hate and abuse them.

Reform police practices by all means. But approach the problem seriously, not with a bunch of idiotic slogans.

I'm sick of it. If gang members want to kill each other without hurting the innocent, I'm at the point where I don't care.

Same here. I don't care if these gang members slaughter each other....the tragedy occurs when some innocent person is caught in the crossfire. Around here the vast majority of the violent crime occurs in specific areas, and among a specific "demographic"....which increasingly blames the police and society for their problems....instead of looking inward for solutions.

This is what happens when people are allowed to do as they please...mob rule. Yet when the government try to take back control, they are accused of being dictators.

The primary problem with any attempts to control guns is that Only the law abiding people adhere to any such regulations. The criminals and thugs would Never turn in any of their weapons.
Funny thing about this. Many other nations have managed to stop the flow of guns onto their streets and reduce gun violence dramatically.

The US continues to bemoan that it can't be done while other nations prove it can.

Sorta puts me in mind of how we're doing with containing this virus...

When it comes to guns it's easy to look for info to present either side.

I don't own a gun, never have but agree legal ownership & legal use is a right.

It's about ability to buy & use that is more the factor. Take Chicago similar to laws concerning drugs the toughest gun laws aren't working. With borders north & south & ports east & west guns like drugs will reach the hands & be used by criminals.

Look on the bright side. Urban crime may be skyrocketing, but since the George Floyd riots we have accomplished so much.

We have toppled statues, looted stores, spray-painted everything in sight, cut police budgets, established wonderfully functional "autonomous zones", renamed the Dixie Chicks "the Chicks" and Lady Antebellum as "Lady A", and painted Black Lives Matter on Fifth Avenue in front of you-know-who Tower. Every white person now knows that he/she/they is irrevocably racist and suffering from white privilege and something called "white fragility."

I can't wait for 2021 and more progress.

At one time, a person needed a legitimate reason to get a carry permit. For example; they carry large sums of money for their job. Then, in about 1975, someone filed a suit that the SCOTUS ruled on and they stated that the 2nd amendment rights weren't being interpreted properly. So, today any fool that isn't a convicted felon, been in a nuthouse, has a PFA against them or has been found to be a user of illegal substances can get a carry permit. WELL, GLORY HALLELUJAH!!! Anyone can now get a carry permit, but even with this in mind, most gang-bangers do not have a permit.

Just to be clear, if you read the 2nd Amendment, it mentions that a militia may carry a weapon. Well, our great SCOTUS, determined that one (1) person can be a militia.

911, I agree with you that the Second Amendment should not be an obstacle to reforming gun laws.

However, I would point out that, while we are awash in legal and illegal firearms, gun homicides have dropped dramatically in recent years. This is from Pew Research:

But the number of gun murders remained far below the peak in 1993, when there were 18,253 gun homicides – and when overall violent crime levels in the U.S. were much higher than they are today.

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/08/16/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/

So there doesn't seem to be much correlation between gun homicides (dropping) and gun ownership (rising).

Am I missing something? Your viewpoint is really valuable here.

I’m sorry but you can’t even compare the two countries when it comes to gun violence. Gun violence is going up in every country because violence has. People are extra stressed due to this virus and desperate people use desperate measures.

Most of Canada doesn’t carry the same attitude about guns as the Americans, mainly because they are illegal and I’m really glad they are.

Of course we still have violence in Canada but it’s minimal in comparison and that takes population into consideration.

In my opinion, that's nothing but an excuse... the same excuse given for the upswing in domestic abuse and child abuse... there are other ways of dealing with stress than injuring or killing people.

If that's all you gleaned from the protests after the police brutality murder of George Floyd, I truly don't know how to respond to you.
