Making Decisions is Agonizing

Why is it so difficult for me now to make a decision when making large purchases or hiring someone to do something? Decades ago, when I needed a car or appliance, I just went and bought it. Or if I needed some home improvements, hire someone out of the Yellow Pages. Now I feel I have to get reviews on all purchases or research contractors and, even then, I get conflicting opinions from different sources. Why do I always feel like no matter what I choose, it will be the wrong decision?

Don't know. Maybe because we all have made mistakes along the way and try avoiding them now. I try to get reviews and opinions on major purchases, but when I'm ready I pull the trigger.

debodun, I'm no expert, but I think a lot of us have this problem. 20 to 40 years ago things were done in simpler ways. Now in our older years we have a million and one new ways to assimilate, just to be able to function in this new and modern world. Making decisions is way more confusing because there are so many more things to consider.
I try to remember to think as if the new ways were to fall apart tomorrow, how would I make my decisions.
Simplify your choices. When there are too many choices, things get confusing.

We do have to be cautious when making major purchases (unless we have money to throw out the window), or hiring repairmen, etc. We are older and wiser now, and realistically, over the past few decades, the amount of scammers and con artists have increased greatly. Many times they prey on the elderly, luckily most of us are wise enough not to fall for a snow job.

Like Bullie, I'll research stuff online for any purchase I'm thinking of making, regardless of the cost. But, I consider that the reviews are many times exaggerated by the happy or unhappy customer, and not true to the word. Also, many reviews are completely false, and made by people who never even used the product.

If I'm considering some work on the house, or tree-trimming, etc., I will look at the company's website, and the BBB to see what I can see. But again, their ratings are just worth so much, many times it's not because no customers had problems with them, but how they dealt with the complaint. We always need to use our own judgment on whether we even want to deal with a company that's had so many issues, whether resolved or not.

None of us can predict the future, so we can't tell if we made a wrong decision until we use the service/product. It's very wise to agonize a bit IMO, and watch our own backs as far as paying for things in advance, etc. I don't hire anyone who knocks on my front door either, they usually are scammers who skip town after you pay to have you "roof fixed", etc.

You're not alone Deb, and you're doing the right thing in this day and age.

A good rule of thumb is to stay away from people who contact you about doing work. Deal with people who are recommended by satisfied clients, you trust. Never feel rushed to make a decision...that is a red flag.

Agreeing with what was said above. Since many seniors have limited resources, mistakes are expensive, especially if it drains resources that can't be replaced.

Life has gotten more complicated, especially with the Internet and the need to google everything before buying it. It does save shoe leather while shopping, however.

Agree that it is probably because of all the scams, rip offs & inferior products out there nowadays.

Everyone is more cautious anymore.

Gotta be.
