Six people were killed today during a stabbing rampage in Sydney that left multiple people critically injured including a mother and her baby.

The knifeman attacked a mother and her nine-month-old baby at around 3.30pm, at Bondi Junction Westfield mall, which was packed with shoppers and went into lockdown just before 4pm local time on Saturday.

The child is now undergoing surgery in hospital. The motive was not immediately clear and police have not ruled out terrorism.

Police have not identified the attacker but believe he acted alone. He was shot and killed by a hero female police officer, who apprehended the knifeman alone after being on patrol nearby.

Multiple other shoppers have been injured in the attack and taken to hospitals across the city.

Bystanders said they had seen multiple people outside the shopping centre with blood on their clothes.

Anthony Cooke, assistant commissioner of New South Wales Police, said: 'A man walked into Westfield at Bondi Junction, he left the centre very shortly after and returned... as he moved through the centre he engaged with about nine people.

'It is clear that during that engagement he caused harm to those people, we believe by stabbing them with a weapon he was carrying.

'Very clearly a range of reports were made on the incident, police attended promptly - a single unit officer, inspector of police, was nearby, attended, [and] went into the centre directed by a range of people.

'She confronted the offender who had moved, by this stage, to level five.

'As she continued to walk quickly behind to catch up with him he turned to face her, raised a knife, she discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased.'

He added: 'I'm advised that there are five victims who are now deceased as a result of the actions of this offender.

'There are more than several other people who have been conveyed to hospital - a number of those are in serious and or critical conditions at this stage and I do not have further information in relation to descriptions of those people.

'I know one of them is a small child.'

It was later confirmed that six people died in the attack.

God be with the victims' families! What a horrendous act of violence!

This is why people need to be able to defend themselves & others by any means possible. AND not to be prosecuted for doing so.

Personally, I think that's the wrong idea. All you're doing is throwing gasoline on the fire. We need FEWER weapons, not more. If we have more, then we create circumstance where this type of thing is more likely to happen.

I know this very much runs contrary to US thinking. And I also know that criminals will get weapons whether there are laws or not. But that's kinds of the point. Giving everyone a weapon just creates more possible killers.

What concerns me more is that the anxiety around the world is growing and growing, and un-checked.

It is all so horrible, the latest by police is to say it was not a terror attack and that "the suspect was known to the police."
I hope there is an inquest into this, as the last words of the above statement chill me to my bones.

There are way too many people with mental health issues roaming our streets, and yet the government keeps closing long-term mental health hospitals.

The buck has to stop somewhere.

The suspect was known to police just means he had a criminal record or was under investigation for something.

Doesn't neccesarily mean he had any mental health diagnosis.

Thank goodness neither you @Tish , or @oscash were anywhere near that mall... have you shopped there ?
Hi hollydolly : That Westfield shopping centre in Bondi Junction is a long way away from where I shop. I haven't shopped there for over20 years, and it has grown into a huge complex. On news today they are saying that the perpetrator has been identified as a man from Queensland who is known to the Q'ld Police. He suffers from schizophrenia since he was 17. He came to Sydney and was advertising in local papers offering himself as an escort worker. When his relatives saw photos of him, they immediately contacted police saying they knew him.

This is a really sad situation, one that I would never
see, because it is in Australia, I like Australians, having
worked with them, here in London, I never met a bad
one.

He must have wanted to commit suicide, he took a knife
to a gun fight!

R.I.P. all those who got in his way, my condolences to the
families left behind.

Mike.

@hollydolly, I have shopped there before, when my granddaughter came to stay for a while, we made our way to Sydney for a week, and naturally, she wanted to go to Bondi beach, and then we shopped at that Westfields, for a 5-floor shopping centre it was so very clean and the food in the food court was incredible, so many choices.

I still can't believe it happened, it's heartbreaking, God only knows how many more he would have killed if that police officer hadn't shot him dead.

The strangest thing is in all the videos I have watched, I did not see one security guard in the place.

It might be time to arm our security guards.

Very sad news. It's spreading all over the world 🙏
Could it be the warmer/hotter seasons, when I was young and
in the RAF, in the Middle East, I experienced very hot weather,
we always reckoned that the heat affected the "Arabs", all of
the different nations all seemed to be argumentative and always
shouting, even those who came here for work, all seemed to be
the same, loud and unpredictable.

So as it is Autumn in Australia, maybe he was more affected by
the Summer just gone and carried it forward into his final actions!

Mike.

New details have emerged about Joe Cauchi, who murdered six people and left a nine-month-old baby fighting for her life following Saturday's stabbing rampage. The shoppers were killed during the attack at Bondi Junction's Westfield centre in Sydney before Cauchi was gunned down by a hero female police officer.

The knifeman, 40, had previously listed himself on several male escort websites, including Australia Cracker, Empire Escorts and Escorts Australia. In his online biography, Cauchi described himself as an 'athletic good-looking 39-year-old' based in Sydney who was looking for a 'fun time' - and offered dozens of 'closed door services' which are too graphic to publish.

His family has now issued a statement via Queensland Police, saying he had suffered mental health issues 'since he was a teenager'.

The family said: 'We are absolutely devastated by the traumatic events that occurred in Sydney yesterday.

'Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims and those still undergoing treatment at this time.

'Joel's actions were truly horrific, and we are still trying to comprehend what has happened. He has battled with mental health issues since he was a teenager.

'We are in contact with both the New South Wales Police Force and Queensland Police Service and have no issues with the police officer who shot our son as she was only doing her job to protect others, and we hope she is coping alright.'

According to his social media profiles, Cauchi grew up in Toowoomba and claimed he worked as an English tutor.

I read about it in The Guardian yesterday. (They do a really good job of new reporting, BTW.) Joel Cauchi named as Bondi Westfield attacker who stabbed shoppers

Very tragic and sad. Democracies just don't know what to do with their very mentally ill. Mental health sanitariums do not have to be evil, terrible places. Some people, very few, really need that kind of protection from themselves and others. I'm sure I'd like Australia if I ever visited the place. Except it's hot in the summer. I'd have to visit in winter or spring. I hope that baby survives without major complications.

Mentally ill are very much ignored in the USA. I agree you can have a safe and healthy place for treatment for these individuals.

or if he was compliant with treatment.

There is a thing here called Community Treatment Orders though - which mean you have to follow treatment, usually you get support to do so, but you can be taken into protective custody/hospital if you do not comply.

Of course that is only in extreme situations where people are likely to be of harm to themselves or others - obviously he was, but not helpful if not known beforehand.

Latest update on the Westfield slayings.

3 security guards were stabbed in the Bondi Junction attack, it has emerged, including one who was killed trying to stop the attacker, Fariz Tahir 30, is thought to have been on his first day in the security job. A second guard, who has yet to be identified, was also killed in the attacks, while
the third, is in a stable condition. I feel so sad for their families.
