Mall Killings in Sydney Australia..

Mentally ill are very much ignored in the USA. I agree you can have a safe and healthy place for treatment for these individuals.
I'm a recovery support worker and I work in mental health. The mentally ill are not ignored in Western Australia but they are not cared for as adequately as they could be.

As sad as this situation is he would have killed many more people if he had access to a gun. In the states some security guards can carry guns. The mother of the baby died. My heart breaks for all of the victims and their families.

Same in the US. Treatment is inadequate for the most-part. Patients are usually prescribed drugs and there isn't much monitoring after that.

Parents have to go through a court process to get their adult children with serious life-long mental illness into a long-term care facility (if it's involuntary), so they have court costs and attorney fees, and if the adult child has no source of income they've also got to pay the facility a couple thousand bucks every month for the rest of their lives. Even some of the crappy state-subsidized facilities charge several hundred.

This is why people need to be able to defend themselves & others by any means possible. AND not to be prosecuted for doing so.
This is why I am well prepared with carrying a .380 on my ankle and a 9mm pocket pistol. Sig Sauer P365. You can carry this pistol in your deep pocket or a quick release holster. I also wear cargo pants and carry my extra clips in the opposite side pocket. I have only had to draw my weapon one time while in New Orleans.

As someone once said, “You should never bring a knife to a gun fight,”

Some more on the story.

The killer was running up an escalator towards a children's play area. He was confronted by a Frenchman armed with a bollard and chased back down. This brave man, whose name is Silas Despreaux has been dubbed Bollard Man.

Our Prime Minister has offered him a permanent visa and has told him that he can stay here as long as he likes.

"Without guns, you don't need "good guys with guns". "Good guys" can improvise".

When I became an Investigator for the state police, we were called to the scene of a murder. The female was 33 y/o and a lot of evidence had been left behind, so it wasn’t too difficult to find our suspect, which was her ex-husband.

The Senior Investigator, who was training me had told me that in most murders when a knife is used, it’s a very personal act. The suspect wants to inflict pain and suffering.

I'm guessing that is true most of the time.

Some years ago a man killed a prostitute known to him in a Sydney apartment using a knife, then ran down a busy city street slashing victims until he was tackled and held down by men using cafe chairs and a milk crate.

I read the article. The perpetrator stabbed a few people while being chased. If a person knows what he’s doing, the knife stabber will always go for the throat or the center of the chest. If they are like the guy in the article and just slashing at people, he is only trying to inflict pain. If I had to make a choice, I would rather be shot. Much quicker at dying, if the shooter knows where to shoot and hits the target.

We have had a few or maybe several serial killers that have targeted prostitutes. Gary Ridgeway may be the best known. According to him, he killed 80, but pled guilty to 48, I believe. I have tried to study what makes people want to kill several people and in this manner. There is a well-known psychoanalyst, Dr. Michael Stone (died in 2023) who wrote books about how the mind works for serial killers.

He was quite brilliant and taught at Columbia University in New York, which was his home state. I was quite impressed with his writings. He spent his life studying serial killers. I found his writings very intriguing and definitely interesting. I did learn from him when I attended a seminar at Columbus that I attended and paid for my own way hoping to have a chance to speak with him. I was lucky enough to get about 3 minutes with him.

Personally, I think that's the wrong idea. All you're doing is throwing gasoline on the fire. We need FEWER weapons, not more. If we have more, then we create circumstance where this type of thing is more likely to happen.

I know this very much runs contrary to US thinking. And I also know that criminals will get weapons whether there are laws or not. But that's kinds of the point. Giving everyone a weapon just creates more possible killers.

What concerns me more is that the anxiety around the world is growing and growing, and un-checked.
Fewer weapons creates more possible victims.
(sorry if someone already said this)

@911
You don't need me to tell you this guy was a mass killer as opposed to a serial killer.
That’s correct. There is an acute difference, but one person can be both. A killer can take out several people at one time, like Ted Bundy or the killer can kill one at a time, like a serial killer. Bundy was both.

we have been proud of our gun control laws in Oz for some time - we need similar laws for knives - life has become more complex and crazy and hazardous and for some insane - take care now!

I dont have any problem with security guys carrying guns - like police they are well vetted and as far as I know in Australia there has not been a case of one killing somebody in an unwarranted situation.

I'm not sure what the laws for knives are - but the problem being ordinary people have knives capable of stabbing people in everyday life situations - kitchens etc
There are probably laws about carrying knives for unneccesary purposes - but problem is still that somebody like this killer can access one readily
