I went to a lecture today called, "Prostate Cancer and You" at a senior center. I found it interesting that there were so few people in attendance. I also found it interesting that there were more women than men. They say that 1 in 9 men will develop prostate Cancer. So where are the men?

I went up to the presenter at the end of the lecture and told him that the room should be packed with senior men. I told him that, from my experience, that men are strange. They will talk about their trucks, their football, their hockey games and maybe complain about the government or weather but talk about health is a "can of worms" for them.

No wonder women outlive men. Women care more about their health and insist on learning about health issues. It's like the men have their heads in the sand and just hope that the medical issues go away.

I would imagine that most if not all these women were there because the men in their lives wouldn't attend.. and they're there to get all the information on his behalf..

My ex husband is just recovering from Prostate cancer.. his was discovered during a Male wellness check, and he didn't hesitate to get something done.and hopefully the doctors have removed all traces..

We have lost many men in our family to prostate cancer. Men do not want to face the fact that something in that area could go very, very wrong. They think it is some kind of failure, an attack on their manhood. Simple test, blood drawn every year, rectal exam. I know men don't like that but it is necessary and life saving. Women also have to go through the same thing but we also do the ******l exam and pap smear. Then we have to get a breast exam and mammogram. Our tests are more invasive and painful. We have had to have most of this from a young age so we have become used to these exams.

I beg, I plead all you guys, just get the exams, just get the tests. The alternative of a late diagnosis is not good. Catch it early and be proactive in any kind of medical care you need. You are worth it!! Your families need you here!!

A good friend was adamant, let me use that word again, adamant that he’d Never have a rectal exam. Then things were going very, very wrong. So far he’s doing well. An understatement to say that the aggressive, later stage treatments were much more painful.

My father had a high PSA reading for years, was afraid he had prostate cancer and went to the Mayo Clinic every 6 months to have it tested. He was a fanatic about his health. I'm glad he taught me that.

I visit my doctor every 6 months for checkups. I also have high PSA levels. I had a Prostate Biopsy several years ago that proved negative. It was uncomfortable but reassuring. I am not afraid to face any diagnosis early because if issues are caught early they can be treated. I don't consider myself weak to ask for medical assistance. I just want to live a healthy life.

You bet! The earlier you catch the problem, the greater chance of solving the problem. I started getting a medical checkup every 2nd year when I was 45. Then at 55, I got a annual checkup. Never hurts. Men, you got to face it: your hockey and your football team wouldn't give a "hoot" about your cancer if you get it but your wife, your children and your family and friends will.

Men understand about changing oil in their vehicles and getting a tune-up but somehow they don't understand that their bodies could use a checkup too.

No argument

aaaand, they have a sixth sense kinda thing

The nice blend 'tween us knuckle draggers and the finer beings of our species is.....they have hearts, therefore are more emotional
Whereas us guys are a bit more stoic, maybe more practical

Not gonna mention the other organs that seem to influence our decision making

I'll be in the shop

Well, that’s your opinion and I’ll leave it at that.

Prostate cancer is easily treated if diagnosed early enough. It’s also easily treated. My uncle died from prostate cancer, but only because of his stubbornness. He was my dad’s brother and grandpa was still alive at the time when my uncle told Gramps that his PSA was 14 or 15. Gramps told him to call an Urologist that day, but he said he wasn’t going to anymore doctors because he was feeling fine. About a year or so later, he was down with pain at the bottom of his torso and problems urinating. He went to the Urologist and the next day the office called him with the bad news. Three years later, he died, but he was in real pain. When we went up to visit him, he was in a hospital bed with a morphine drip. He died a few days later, but he was in constant pain, even having a morphine drip around the clock. Hospice spent the last week with him. Those people are great at what they do. I took the one Hospice worker out for an evening just to show our appreciation. We both needed that.

Not even talking about prostate stuff
Jus' stuff in general
I have twice yearly checkups
Dad had prostate cancer, found in his 70s
Lived to 93
My boss had it about twenty years ago
He's still topside, feisty as ever

Yes
Get your checkups!

On a side note, I had my first colonoscopy this year
Getting wheeled down the hall to surgery, half out, singing 'Like a Virgin'
That's all I remember
Not all that fond of the preop gobbledygook to clean me out.

@Gary O'

Yup .. the prep is much worse than the conoloscopy.
I've had three.
Easiest prep was in Australia. It tasted like flat orange soda, and allowed barley candy.

Gary——I believe that woman probably have better common sense than men because they take the time to think about the problem. Men want to get to it and get it over with. It reminds me of the axiom that men won’t stop for directions, which is mostly true. Men just want to get to where they are going. On the other hand, women will drive 15 miles out of their way to save $3 on a new handbag. It’s in our DNA.

I took a nice lady to dinner maybe a month ago. We went to a very nice restaurant where prices were what you would expect at a restaurant in downtown Washington. I could tell she was studying the prices and finally ordered some type of Cobb salad with chicken. I asked her if truthfully, if that was what she was really hungry for. She thought for a moment and asked what I was having. I told her the stuffed pork chops. She changed her order to a petite filet mignon with small crab cake. Now that’s what I call using good common sense. No one eats a McDonald’s salad while your date is eating stuffed pork chops. The waiter looked at me and winked. I did like the fact that she made me aware that she didn’t like champagne.

Sadly, I have to agree that men have their heads in the sand regarding their own health. The participants in the classes I've been attending over the years at the gym are predominantly women. Most are either widowed, or waiting to be, with their husbands are laying around at home letting their health gradually spiral down. Hey, I don't mind exercising with a bunch of fit ladies in yoga pants but..

At Kaiser Permanente, they provide a screening test for prostate cancer that is the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. A blood test that measures how much PSA is in your blood. A high level may mean that you have an enlarged prostate, an infection, or cancer. If so, then a prostate exam would come next. No history of prostate cancer in my family. Generally I've been very careful with my health in all ways since I screwed up at age 20 that caused a splenic artery pseudoaneurysm. For instance rarely have had head colds or influenza my entire adult life.

Thankfully my PSA tests have been coming in at a very low value. I have an extensive family history for prostrate cancer, all males descending from my maternal grandfather(maybe further back?) my 3 uncles (mother's brothers) and also my brother have had prostrate cancer.
I just had a dr. visit a couple days ago he ordered labs, will go for labs after a 12 hour fast.

I am going to join an exercise class in our complex next week. I wouldn't be surprised if I am the only male there! I hope I am wrong!

The ladies are fun, they won't bite! ;)

Edit: that said, I do empathize, when I first started the classes(Yoga, Silver Sneakers etc) I felt very self conscious being the only man. But, the women were welcoming, eventually becoming personal friends to this day.
