Oh, I do love a good gentle massage, gentle being the operant word. I've only had one "therapeutic" massage and that was enough! I don't care for anything like Rolfing at all. Rolf, stay away!
My all-time favorite massage was at the historic baths in Saratoga Springs. First you get a long soak in a very deep bath filled with fizzy mineral water, slightly radioactive at that. It's like soaking in murky, salty, bitter ginger ale. Then you get an hour's massage...aaaaahhhhh...and then they wrap you in a hot sheet and put you to bed. You can stay as long as you want because there are lots of rooms. It was a rather grim setting, old bathtubs set in the floor, very institutional rooms with windows set up high in the walls, iron beds....sort of like a TB hospital or an insane asylum set in an old movie, but the price was right and the experience was sublime.
Then after I napped for an hour or so, I got dressed and walked through the wooded park back to my sister's house. A gentle snow was falling on the pine trees and it was very, very quiet.
