May I Have This Dance?

No, really, I have two left feet. I tried to learn to dance in high school, and it was, at best ugly. Slow dance? All I did was step all over my partner's feet. Fast dance? Think Elaine on Seinfeld (except I'm a guy).

I have no sense of rhythm and am not terribly coordinated. And at 71 years old, that ain't gonna change. However, my new SO, when younger, loved to dance and thinks she can teach me how.

Can you dance? Do you still kick up your heels when the occasion arises?

One of my problems was that when we learned to dance (in gym class) there were only girls....so we had to dance with each other. Being tall early in my development, I always had to be the "guy". So now, when I dance with a real guy, I still instinctively try to lead.

That's ONE of my problems. My main problem is that I.JUST.CAN'T.DANCE. I did do a mean "twist", though, back in the 60's. Don't have the backbone for it now. When they say "Put your hand on your hip and let your backbone slip", that's EXACTLY what's gonna happen.

My late husband and I tried dance classes (ballroom and country). They were held at night school and the instructor diplomatically asked if we might want to consider pottery instead, as it was offered on the same night down the hall.

lol - off topic, but many years ago my foursome at a golf outing came in dead last. Waaaay last. Instead of a trophy, we each got a sleeve of tennis balls......

I only mentioned dancing in a thread a few days ago about ago ,think it may have been about dating your o/h

Yes we dance , ( Ballroom ) however it’s not only dancing it’s the social, side of our life as well

We are going out dancing tonight for our usual Saturday night out .

Monday we have a social day with the dance group we are having a hot potato van coming to supply our lunch .( for 150 people )

Tuesday afternoon dance

I’d like to know how popular Ballroom dancing is in other countries ? ( I live in Australia )

Sadly our group is getting smaller as people get older and dropping off due to illness there are not any younger people joining in.

Kadee dear,
Dance to your hearts content and who cares who’s watching. Bless your heart.

In my single days, my buds would cruise the dance floor
I’d cruise the tables and chairs

Now?

I still cruise tables and chairs
To sit
Hide

My poor lady, loved to dance.
Made even me look good.
She could do that, danced for a living.
Sat at my table

We’re still there

Years ago I took a Clog Dancing class in the evenings---two nights a week for 8 weeks. It was really a lot of fun.

This is what we *strove* for. (Never quite got that far. LOL)

You can do duets also. This was more our speed. :playful:

I would like to dance in public but I've been told that the "Elaine" dance is not acceptable.
I did dance with my son at his wedding. He got his slow dancing skills from me so we just sort of rocked back and forth.
I envy people who can dance well.

Nope!

Hoot N Annie, I can dance, but when I was young
I had no idea and all dancing was ballroom then, so
I tried lessons from a dancing school, no real help.

There were many aids around and lots of advice with
details about how to dance, my head understood, but
it didn't know how to tell my feet.

There are diagrammes in Google images that show you
the basic steps for each dance, I copied one to put here,
but I have no idea what dance it is for.

Stick to the basics at first until you get the hang of it all,
then you can try to elaborate later, which is much easier
if you are at a party and had some drink.

Good Luck.

Truth be known, I'm ho-hum...but when I watch TV and someone is dancing to a beat that's great for exercise, I'll...shhh...get up and try to match their moves and throw myself all over the place, by head, my arms, legs, feet, hips, tushie, until my heart is pounding hard.

I let loose and I don't care how it looks. Blu and Bella (dogs) think I look FUN and start barking up a storm and running all around. Oh but sometimes I'll dance over to the hall where, at the end, is a tall mirror and if I'm not looking like those on TV (and I never do) then I'll change it up so I at least look coordinated and in rhythm (don't want to break anything) and then....collapse on the couch. Please don't tell.

Have you ever seen "Shall We Dance" with Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, and Susan Serandon? Well, Gere plays a bored businessman and bored husband. I know you're not that but stay with me here. So he decides to take dance lessons from Jennifer Lopez (instructor) and is falling for her romantically, but she keeps it all business (good for her). Lopez turns him into a good dancer!

Okay, it's a chick flick, but here's the message. He goes back to his wife with a new kick in his step and a fire lit inside his heart. And wows her with his dance steps.

You can do that with your SO, Hoot. Surprise her! She'll love it. And may return the favor....maybe a candlelight dinner and massage

I really enjoyed "Shall We Dance". Saw it when it came out, and I've watched it several times since. I especially liked the performance of the two actors who played Richard Gere's classmates. :)

And Gere has never looked bad in a tux.

Among my workouts, I have some dance workouts I do, but definitely not the same.
Dance lessons are something I've been wanting to do for awhile now.
On my short bucket list for sure!

I have danced all my life, since I fist fell in love with tap dancing aged 7 years old. I love to dance, always have done, learned ballroom at Dance school which was my regular senior school , lots of Scottish country dancing being a Scot. ..couldn't get enough of Disco dancing in my youth... but sadly now I rarely ever get the chance to dance because my husband just won't do it. We have a wedding coming up soon to attend and the music is going to be a Scottish and Irish cèilidh, so I'm just gonna join everyone else on the dance floor, and leave my husband cuddling his whisky.. there's no way I can not dance at this wedding ( back problem permitting)...I'm really looking forward to it , it's donkeys years since I was at a proper Scottish / Irish Shindig

I've always loved to dance. Jr/Sr high school there was always a dance on Friday night after the game. I remember a few short, nerdy guys who were excellent dancers and became very popular with the girls. Some of the 'jocks' would just stand and watch, or wait for a slow dance so they could hold the girl tight and 'grind' .

On my first date with my first real bf we went with another couple to be on a live TV dance show; did the Jerk and the Swim.

At one job our accountant was so mean and grouchy; nobody liked him. Then he brought his wife to our Christmas party and they tore the floor up! They were like pros....our jaws dropped watching them! He turned into a different person. :)
