Medicare Part B premium overpayment

My spouse started receiving Medicare August 1st, her birth month. Medicare required her to pay the first four months of Part B coverage up front, which she did. She also signed up for SS retirement to begin in September. The first SS payment was scheduled to be paid in October. This is all fine and normal. The issue is that SSA deducted 6 MONTHS of ADDITIONAL Part B premiums from her first payment on October.

She filed an appeal in early September, and we understand she will be refunded the excess premium payment eventually. Neither Medicare or the SSA could explain why this happened and now SSA can't even tell us the status of the appeal.

Has this happened to anyone else?

If they can't explain what happened then maybe somebody there is skimming.

As a new widow, money concerns are forefront for me so when I inquired about this huge death benefit that SS is supposed to give you ($255), I found out it takes months to get it. Not only do they take away your SS benefit that you've worked for, but they take back the deceased payment for the month he/she died.

Good luck, PapaEd, in getting your money back. Don't hold your breath.

I am having issues with Medicare. Mine are different than the terrible "mistake" they made with you all. I need some assistance because I am medically challenged and it cost more than I can afford WITH part A and B. I applied for "Medicare Savings Programs". That was 4 weeks ago. I wonder if I will ever find out anything. We tried calling. All we got were machines. So, IDK what's going on, but I am losing about $200 a month. If I don't stop bleeding , I will be out of money in a few years.

OT to thread, pardon the interruption:

How are you doing? Have you started working through some of your issues?

Thank you for asking :) It's been 3 weeks since that awful day and yesterday, 11/2, would have been his birthday. Some days are better than others. I think I'm finally seeing daylight as far as paperwork goes. I can't believe how much has to be done and how long it takes for things to be settled. For example, his life insurance policies will take about 4 months to process. o_O

The first year is especially brutal w holiday, etc. Glad to hear that you're making progress and hopefully you've taken some time to take care of yourself through the ordeal. Please let us know if we can be of any help.

Ya, this happened to me.
They wanted 3 months up front.
Then I got a letter from SS saying they would take out Medicare from each check.
Luckily, I paid the 3 months with a credit card. I contested it with the credit card company and they reversed the charges. Medicare didn't challenge it so I got my money back.
