I booted up the other day and a message to change my password appeared so I did. Anyone else ever experience this?

Our local news (Phoenix) has lots of warnings almost every night about scams and one of them was about Microsoft messages. I get them, too, so I Googled and Microsoft says they will never contact you to change a password. I also get messages from Ebay and Pay Pal that I throw in the Scam folder and delete them. Be careful!

One way to check the veracity of a request like this is to go to the main web page of the entity you think sent you the email.
Virtually all of these sites (Microsoft, eBay, etc) will have you log in to access your account. Once there, you can check for any messages you may have been sent, plus, you can always safely change your password there.

As a rule of thumb, NEVER click on any link in an email you received. This will protect you from getting scammed or hacked. I don't want to rain on your parade, but if it were me, I would log into my Microsoft account and re-change my password. Who know who just got the password you just changed to.

It is bogus, Microsoft does not tell anyone to change passwords...Change the password to something else and make it good. Letters, numbers mixed up. Many sites with tell you what they allow.

There is a very good likelihood that you got "spammed". MS would never send such a message. By changing your password, you quite likely have installed a Trojan, etc., that is just waiting for an opportunity to use your personal data against you....hack a credit card, etc. You would be wise to change your password, again, then run a full system scan with your Anti-Virus.

please be most careful ' if there was a real problem your security that u have would have said '
I was hacked few years back -thats why I never bank on line ….!

You might want to think about downloading a password manager app. I have been using a free one called Last Pass now for 2 years and really like it. It stores all of your user names and passwords (plus other function if you want to use them) and all I have to remember is one password to access it. From my vault in the app, I can launch any of the sites I visit where I need to sign in and it will fill in my user name and password. Search for it and read the reviews.

I just went on to change my password and as far as I can tell the initial message from Microsoft was legit. It was the exact copy of the first procedure. I can't explain it but I have a second new password now.

Recently I've gotten several weird looking pop-ups claiming to be from Microsoft but I delete immediately.

I received two from Microsoft on different days about a Microsoft security key. But I deleted them without opening them because these days, it might be them but more than likely, it isn't so why take the chance.

Could have been a trap to get your new password, just like today I got mail "addressed" from Yahoo to say I was part of a security award...if it looks to good then it probably isn't real. I hope thing were legit for you.
