Mining the "Golden Years".

I didn't want to intrude and sidetrack "Annie's Adventures" with my own personal ramblings so I put up a separate thread.
I woke up very early this morning and was browsing the forum. I had been kidding Annie about their Kayaking in Thailand and decided to take my first look at her "Adventure" thread. Wow! What a treat! Great photos! I enjoyed myself thoroughly. They both seemed to be having such a good time. I went back to bed and realized I still had a smile on my face. I started thinking about the vacations Eleanor and I had when we were first retired. I was 63 and my child bride 57. We did have some great times. I remember sitting with her in The Ft William Henry Inn. It was off season, and all of the tables were filled with couples just like us. I said "Look around. We are in a room full of life's winners".
I guess the point of my thread is that there really are "Golden Years". They don't come to everybody. There is a limited amount of gold and it takes two able bodied people to mine it.
So those of you "young" ones who are able; pick up those picks! The gold runs out soon enough. :eek:ld:.

What a lovely and inspiring thread underock. My husband and I were just saying today that we are kind of enjoying doing nothing right now. After holidays and a major move we are kinda worn out. These quiet times are nice too, and I'm so grateful that we can be home together. Golden indeed.

Great post, Rock.

As Charley Brown would say, though ...

"I got a rock"

Guess there's no way to mine gold as a solo act, huh?

:awman: There are many different mines, Phil. Each has its own treasure. Sapphires, rubies, even diamonds. If all else fails there's always the town saloon!

I agree Underrock1 but you said it better than I could have. The 3 of us here really appreciate and enjoy our golden years, even with a few health snags along the way. People probably think we are nuts but they (and part of the time me) sit out by their fire pit most evenings. No TV for them.

Well you can dig out gold with a pick or pan for it in the stream, which takes a lot less effort. Enjoying each other at home works too. Thank you for your kind words,

Thanks. Linda. Probably counting up their winnings, They look like a couple of experienced miners to me.

Underrock1, they are a couple of old workaholics. My brother started working at about 14 but did manage to make it through 3 years of high school. My husband was raised in a family of migrant workers. He is very smart but only has 10 years of formal education. He has scars on his fingers from "topping onions" with a sharp knife before he was old enough to go to school. They both worked hard for over 50 years and now they just like to sit by the fire and TALK and remember the old days (I get tired of listening to the old days stories) and go fishing and work on old cars. I'm glad I have both of them in my life.

Thanks Underock! Glad you enjoyed the thread and that it put a smile on your face. We both totally stopped working at 55 and 58, although we went on our biggest adventure then and hubby volunteered to train teachers in Uganda.

We both love travel and experiencing different cultures, although we've really made ourselves at home in this community in Thailand - we've booked for next winter as well. So as long as we are both healthy and fit we go go go!! I am 64 next month and hubby just turned 67. Feel like kids sometimes....actually very often!

"Feeling like a kid" as a goal in life should be right up there with striving to achieve Nirvana. I may not get out to the playground any more, but I still have a room full of toys. Thanks again for your "Adventures". I have been traveling the world via the You Tube videos of other people's vacations for some time. Its nice to be on "vacation" with someone I actually "know" for a change,

Nice to have you along on the trip, Underock! If you'd like I'll give you the link to my blog. Many travelogues on there.

I think I would enjoy that very much. Thank you, Annie. I would be honored.
