Mississipi Men Charged with Shooting at a Black Fedex Delivery Driver

Stop "theying" when using the N slur. Bring it right down to real people here. Black thugs, hip hop culture may use it, but do you see @OneEyedDiva using it, would you say it in her presence?

Think outside of race. It's socioeconomic status. Thugs of all races/ethnicities tend to use slurs freely. An educated, professional woman like @OneEyedDiva ....I'm betting... hates to hear the N slur in any context, even in music. But you could call me a redneck and I'd post the Bellamy Brother's Redneck Girl video.

The two words in no way carry the same connotation. If you were too ignorant to have known it before, you're not too old to learn it now.

.

I don't care about the connotation, and yes i would use it in her presence if she used it, or referred to a white person using a slur.

I don't care if the delivery man was wearing a black jumpsuit and a ski mask, you can't shoot people for being suspicious. Some woman once called the police on my son while he was out for a walk on the country road past her house. She thought he was "suspicious" because she said her dogs were barking louder than usual.

Agree here ..... If someone looks suspicous, ya call the police.

On that note .... even our letter-carrier/mailman {USPS} wears 'street' clothes from time to time. IMO he/she should be in uniform @ all times.

What you said in post # 19 is a profile of you; not who you were talking about, but YOU and it is sorely lacking. Now get defensive, which is what you usually do.

Yes indeed I defend myself & my position / opinion.

So your saying my speaking out for fairness is a profile of me ? You betcha it is.

Positions reversed, Gibson would have been in jail that night. Why? It's Mississippi. This incident is further proof racism is a family affair in some parts of the South. Let's hope there are no little Cases at home being similarly indoctrinated.

Racism: America's dirty little secret is no longer so secret since so many choose racists for heroes.

Yep. Years ago, my extremely talented Beverly Hills hairdresser got pulled over by the police while driving his convertible Mercedes out by the beach because he looked like he could be black.

And, years ago, an attorney friend parked his Porsche in front of his own house, and the police came because it was in East Los Angeles — a generally Mexican area. I guess they couldn't believe he could have owned the car. I guess you could call him Mexican-American, although he just looked American to me.

And, one of my brothers-in-law, a very dear man, is black.
I normally don't post stuff like this, but I did because it seemed like some may have been pushing the wrong idea about me.

You are not worth answering today @rgp. Today I'm ashamed to know you.

It's too beautiful a day here to waste on his foolishness! Hope it is in your neck of the woods.

The irony of a white Mississippian who is the great-granddaughter of a sharecropper trying to explain that 'redneck' isn't a horrific slur--most often isn't a slur at all--in a thread about Mississippians who actually do fit the definition of those who would use it as a slur is just to rich in humor for continued argument. For the record, going by appearance and behavior, the more fitting term for these guys--one of whom is dressed in a thug shirt-- is "white trash" which most definitely is a slur.

@OneEyedDiva I apologize for referencing you in an attempt at normalizing what's obviously a hopeless discussion. Silly me considering...

Now this Redneck Girl is going to tune in to the Bellamy Brother's greatest hits while I drive to work on a perfect early spring day...

Thanks for saying what I didn't have the guts to say...

Admittedly, as I'd never even heard the term 'redneck' before the last couple of decades, I've never been sure what the word means. I've never used it, but didn't think it was especially bad.

When I was a child, certainly before the age of 10, my mother taught me never to use those sorts of racial terms (although it was not about black people but some kind of Europeans).

And I don't. It's just ugly and bad manners.

Used by anyone ..... Toward anyone !! It is not a one way street.

Amazon drivers also drive plain white vans with no signage.

I know because my grandson drove one for almost a year and they park up the road in a lot. I see them driving out and onto the road in the mornings.
Around here they drive all kinds of vehicles.. awhile back one had a car with HERTZ logos all over it.. more recently, it looked like the driver had his own personal vehicle- just a plain car.

Yes, Janice...I remember getting a small delivery awhile back... the driver was in what seemed to be his own car!

Some people call themselves rednecks as a badge of honor. It's descriptive, not necessarily pejorative. Someone who works hard for a living, often with his or her hands, believes in old-fashioned values such as honesty and integrity, takes care of his/her family, and takes no s__t from anyone. At least that's the way I see it. There are definitely some negative connotations to being a redneck (insular, provincial, probably doesn't have a passport, etc) but some positives as well.

White trash is a whole 'nother thing.

Can we agree that shooting at people is bad, that using the n-word (no matter who you are) is bad, that racism (systemic, inherent, other kinds) is bad? I didn't see anybody leaping to defend the Arbury murderers and I don't see much to defend here.

Reading a biography of Jimmy Carter right now. Early chapters are kind of eye-opening in terms of the racism prevalent in Georgia and the Deep South from the 1920s to the 1960s. Carter didn't participate in the racism, but he valued his life and his family and didn't openly condemn it, either. Doing so was more or less a death sentence at the time.

One example: The only gas station in Plains, GA wouldn't sell Carter gas because of his "liberal" views. He had to install an underground tank and pump it himself to keep his car and pickup truck running.
