Mobiles are to be banned from classrooms, the Education Secretary will announce on Monday.

Gillian Keegan will order schools to outlaw smartphones during lessons, and also in breaks, in a bid to end disruption and make it easier for pupils to focus.

A government source said new guidance would be issued to schools across England requiring them to take action.

'Gillian believes that mobile phones pose a serious challenge in terms of distraction, disruptive behaviour, and bullying,' the insider said. 'It is one of the biggest issues that children and teachers have to grapple with so she will set out a way forward to empower teachers to ban mobiles from classrooms.'

Some schools already ban the use of mobiles, with pupils required to hand in their phones each morning – or face the punishment of a detention if they are caught using them.

But many others still permit their use, particularly during breaks, despite growing evidence of the damage they cause.
Monday's announcement of a ban on the use of mobiles in the classroom follows years of debate about their impact. How the ban is enforced will be down to individual state schools.

Many parents are content for their children to carry a phone so that they can make emergency contact while travelling to and from school.

But the presence of smartphones in the classroom – and constant notifications from apps – has been blamed for causing disruption, as well as fuelling cyber-bullying and thefts. In June, Finland became the latest country to ban phones in class in a bid to reverse a decline in exam results.

The following month, a major United Nations report recommended smartphones should be banned to improve learning and tackle classroom disruption and cyberbullying.

And as other parents in our children's school, it was a necessity in case of emergency. We were specific that they'd turned them on only in an emergency. Along the rules stated by head teacher.

However, there's been articles about students cheating on tests by using their phones to find answers during tests. Which is defeating the purpose. As always the ones following the recommended usage will pay for the greedy ones. What else is new. Someone somewhere always have to spoil it for others.

Hopefully, it'll bring back the quietness requirerto learn the old fashion way. 😂

They can't be banned, impossible to police that move,
there was a large discussion about this on the radio.

The suggestion is that they must not be seen during
the "School Day", if they are in the school bag, they
have to stay there.

Mike.

Well of course they can be banned..just like anything can be banned. They can make them not bring them to school in the first place, and if there's a reason why the must have them to say..call a parent during the day , then they should be handed into an office first thing in the morning, and then be available to collect at break time..

Bringing a banned item to class should and hopefully will mean a detention... or some other punishment.. there's absolutely no need in most cases for children to have phones in class..

They never should have started it, like driving and texting should be banned. How can kids learn with phones going off all day?
Then you have parents that will argue what if there is an emergency I want my child to be able to text me if needed. I don't know how well banning phones will go over but I agree that kids and teachers are distracted by them.

if there's an emergency then kids can go to a teacher or headmaster and they can call the parents just as we did when we were at school... there was hardly ever an emergency.. However they just want to ban the things in class.. so if the kids can drop them off at an office in the morning and collect them at going home time.. or not bring them to school at all... then I don't see a problem..

Currently kids are using phones to intimidate or bully other kids.. and also cheating in tests and exams...

When I bought my first cell phone, the sales person was actually excited to explain how students could text each other during class. It was the only feature of the phone he talked about.

If I taught there I’d want a detailed plan. Phones are expensive and one can’t just confiscate and carry on with a lesson without one going missing. I’d be forced to choose between teaching while distracted and becoming a phone warden.

well the easy method would be not to bring them to school in the first place. Those who do should have to hand them over.. perhaps to the heads office 10 minutes before classes start... it's not rocket science...

It is a huge problem.

Only applies to England.
Education is a devolved power and short of searching every pupil on their way into school impossible to police.
Turned off during lesson time yes.
But banned?
Asking for trouble.
Nice headline…but no one ever thinks this through.

Oh I agree with you but over here I bet parents would not go for it.I already see it on the news with so many school shootings parents are saying "I want my child to be able to call me ASAP" and having to go to a teacher would not be fast enough. I don't know what the solution is but it is a problem in schools.

It is being pointed out on my rail forum that in some parts of the country children travel to school by train.Or service bus.
And where are their season tickets stored?
On their mobile phones.
As I pointed out earlier you must think a policy through before announcing it.
if any school tries to prevent phones being brought through the gate they are going to find some of their pupils are absent.
Because they cannot get to school!
It is only old dinosaurs like me who keep using paper tickets!
