Kind of a weird story, but it does kind of tie in with money growing on trees, or in this case in bushes.
I have a great Uncle that lives in Ft. Lauderdale in a luxury seniors development. This is a beautiful place and does not have any mobile homes or prebuilt housings, but does have a large professional golf course within its boundaries. Most parts of Ft. Lauderdale is beautiful. They do a much better job of keeping things looking bright and fresh than the west coast of Florida does.
It's probably been close to 20 years ago when my Uncle called me just to talk. It was then that he told me this story about his neighbor across the street who told him the following story. (Confused yet?) Anyway, the neighbor said that he has to walk out to his mailbox early every morning to get his newspaper. One morning, on the walk back to his house from the mailbox, he noticed what he thought to be a large shopping bag stuck in behind his bushes. He said at first, he could hardly make it out, but when he was able to pull the bushes back, he saw it was in fact a shopping bag. The neighbor decided to reach behind the shrubbery and pull out the bag. When he did this, he noticed that something was in the bag. When he looked inside, he saw money and lots of it. I still don't know how much. For whatever reason, the neighbor won't tell anyone.
My uncle said he didn't know what to do and was going to go see my Uncle and ask him what he thought he should do. My Uncle is a retired sheriff from Illinois. However, instead, he decided to just hand it over to the police. He thought maybe someone robbed a bank and wanted to stash the bag until things cooled down. Why he decided to go into a senior community, he didn't know, unless he thought it would be the last place cops would look.
The cops took the money and sat on his patio to count it and then gave this man a receipt. He thought if the money went unclaimed, it would go back to him. He hadn't heard from anyone in months, so he decided to call the police and ask about the found cash. The cops told him that they thought the money was from drug deals, which meant that they could confiscate it and keep it for their own use, meaning the police department. The neighbor was not a very happy man after that conversation. Maybe honesty isn't always the best policy. (Just kidding.)
