More Immigration; More Problems!

I would agree that illegal immigration is a problem, not least because most countries do not have the infrastructure to house, feed, clothe, support and educate so many arrivals. The op though, is posting about immigration which, I assume, includes legal immigration; people who have gone through the required procedure to live and work in the country they have chosen to apply to. I have no problem with legal immigrants many of whom start businesses, work in our hospitals and contribute as much as anyone else does. 🤷‍♀️

When Britain really ruled the waves
(from 'Iolanthe')

When Britain really ruled the waves –
(In good Queen Bess’s time)
The House of Peers made no pretence
To intellectual eminence,
Or scholarship sublime;
Yet Britain won her proudest bays
In good Queen Bess’s glorious days!
Yet Britain won her proudest bays
In good Queen Bess’s glorious days!

When Wellington thrashed Bonaparte,
As every child can tell,
The House of Peers, throughout the war,
Did nothing in particular,
And did it very well:
Yet Britain set the world ablaze
In good King George’s glorious days!
Yet Britain set the world ablaze
In good King George’s glorious days!

And while the House of Peers withholds
Its legislative hand,
And noble statesmen do not itch
To interfere with matters which
They do not understand,
As bright will shine Great Britain’s rays
As in King George’s glorious days!
As bright will shine Great Britain’s rays
As in King George’s glorious days!

Often the US doesn’t recognize a person’s degree from another country depending on the school they graduated from. Sometimes they will take 2 years of credits and the person would have to retake the last 2 years of a bachelor’s degree.

The other impediment is the person’s inability to write and read English at the high school level. These were sometimes additional obstacles some of my clients faced in addition to having a disability.

My take on this is the immigrants are mostly good people. We have benefited greatly from emigration. But times are changing.

The real problem is too many people. I think we are making a mistake in the US by continuing to take immigrants in the numbers we’re taking anyway. Our population just doesn’t need to grow any more.

Can’t speak for Canada, Canadians will have to make their own decisions.

That's the crux of it Rob. At least to me. Sooner or later, it will overwhelm the system. As a country, US just cannot continue to absorb and assimilate immigrants, esp. illegal immigrants. No matter US good intentions or the offer of asylum or 'the American dream.' It is just financially or physically not doable long-term. And as a country, we're long past "long-term."

Just reading over the weekend there is another one thousand immigrants leaving Central America on the march north through Mexico with the US southern border as their destination. It boggles the mind. At least it does mine. How in the heck as a country can the US continue to house, feed and care for massive migrant groups such as this?

Canada has a official policy that states " we NEED more University educated young adults, who have children who will become tax payers when they are adults " This group will contribute to our economy as tax payers for 40 or more years, to support the social services system that we have put into place. AS a 76 year old Canadian, I fully support the policy that brings educated and skilled people to Canada, who will be good citizens, who will educate their kids, and who will be the foundation for the future of Canada. WE need more people.

The difference between Canada and the USA is one word. QUALIFIED immigrants, who MUST have a University level degree, with at least 10 years of actual working experience in their specific field of training, PLUS have the money to support themselves and or their families IN THE BANK, for at least a year, once they arrive in Canada. They PAY for all of the investigation of their application, PAY for the fees, PAY for their transportation to Canada, and they CANNOT claim any social services benefits for 5 years after arriving here. The concept is simple....Canada uses a series of tests to find the BEST applicants. Immigrants were/are the building blocks of Canada, going back for 400 years. We are a Nation of Immigrants. JimB.

We have a great influx of Russian draft dodgers entering through Mexico and winding up, where else? NYC. No one pays attention to all the Russians, & that pisses me off. Chinese, too. We only think hispanic.

Pepper, I'm glad you share things that go on in NYC. The things that you've talked about seem to be either not reported, or not done accurately on the news. This goes for everyone living in other countries, too.

To me, it's important to have information from first hand accounts in real time from those living it. It can put an entirely different aspect on so many things. Many times it makes much more sense as to what is actually taking place.
