More people just don't want kids.

The number of people who had children but shouldn't have, far outweighs the number who should have but didn't.

If someone doesn't want to have children that's fine with me - the planet is already struggling with mass human migrations from areas rendered nearly unlivable due to climate change, wars and scant economic opportunity.

And it's going to get worse.

I had wonderful parents who had 3 kids. My brother and I wanted kids and had them. My sister never wanted kids and although a wonderful aunt she wasn’t mother material. She had a bad quick temper and knew it wasn’t conducive to motherhood.

During my 4 years working as a social worker with abused kids I wish many parents would have made the same choice. Kids don’t deserve to be abused. It’s not being selfish as much as recognizing that being a parent is not the right choice for some people. We are all different.

Well then we sure as shit shouldn't be letting such people anywhere near vulnerable slave animals.
Domestic animals cannot survive without people taking care of them. It’s much easier than caring for children. I always wonder about people that don’t like pets. Personally I won’t have anyone in my life that doesn’t like pets. For many years I didn’t have pets because I was busy with my kids however I always loved pets.

Whenever I read you post slave animals it makes me laugh out loud. Many pets are beloved family members and I know for some reason that greatly irritates you. Of course some animals aren’t lucky enough to have loving families which is why I adopt old abandoned dogs.

It isn't an issue of everyone doing or not doing. The problem is that growing numbers are turning away and have been for decades.

Trotting out extreme examples doesn't have any impact on the facts. Producing children safely to maturity is on a steep decline.

Fertility Rate

But since this doesn't fit with the prevalent agenda I'm just beating a dead horse. You know the truth.

Do you seriously think this planet is in any danger of being underpopulated by humans?

Pets are very beneficial to people’s mental health and provide companionship and love. Pets have saved their owner’s lives. Your posts in regard to pets are comedy gold:)).

I feel a sense of impending doom in the U.S. right now, and I think a lot of people feel the same way. Not only is the economy likely to collapse under the weight of all that debt, our political system at the national level is just barely functioning. If events unfold in a certain way, our country could break out into civil war.

Who wants to have children in that kind of environment?

We have seen unbelievable change in the U.S. in the past 15 years. I'm beyond words.
I told my dad the other day "can you imagine what grandpa would say about the state we're in these times?
"Oh, h*ll", he said, with all due exclamation...
My daughter has said she doesn't want kids, and figured I'd be upset about it... I told her I respect her wishes, we should do what's right for us.

It should be the woman in question's choice whether she wants kids or not and I can understand young men not wanting kids either. Kids are expensive and honestly, I don't know how today's young people will be able to cope with the expense of all a child needs.
What you said and also, I think some people are losing their optimism and faith that their kids would have a good life going forward because of climate change and the polarizations and unrest in the world.

Nature wants all living things to reproduce. However not everyone is fit to raise a child properly. I think parenthood should be taught in schools. Pupils need to be aware of what having children really means.
I still don't understand why so many women have children but then carry on working, letting someone else take care of the child. For me, having a child was all about being a mother and looking after it myself. If I had wanted a career, I would not have had children.

what about men?

do you understand why they have children but carry on working?

Probably same reason as women- they need to earn money, they enjoy their job, they decide on the life balance that works for them.

I have 3 adult children (that I know of), 7 grandchildren (that I know of) and 2 great-grandchildren.

I do not live in close proximity to any of them and my contact with them is limited. I won't go into details on that.

That said, there is no way in hell I would have children today, even if I could turn the clock back 40+ years. It's an entirely different world now for child-raising than it was when I had kids, and I'm not certain it's a better world today.

It isn't me. The governments of every industrialized nation in the world are concerned.
The fear of fewer replacement babies is almost exclusively centered around supporting long-lived elderly populations.

More babies won't solve - and indeed will exacerbate - these countries' severe housing shortages, pollution levels, increasing existing population displacement due to climate related destruction, youth unemployment rates, future employment challenges with increased robot use and AI, and more.

Countries REALLY needing more population can easily solve that problem by allowing more immigration.

I think they are only concerned because our economies flourish with more and more people. I don't think they care if we destroy the planet by overpopulating, and probably they don't care if populations are 'controlled' by famine, war, etc.

We need to rethink the economic models, and if AI takes large numbers of jobs and life span is increased -- I think statistically rich people already live 10 yrs longer, and you can bet if a good drug is developed to let people live longer, it will be super expensive and the rich people will be the ones living a thousand years. Though maybe then they would care about the planet.

To me the point of the squirrel study was that birth rates will recover when females are protected from predators and have enough food.

Hear that first sentence everyday!

My adult grandchildren all seem to be of that mind. They prefer dogs and cats in their lives.
