Mother abandons her newborn baby on floor of NYC subway station

She's been caught and arrested. (y) For the record, I'm not a fan of claiming postpartum depression every time someone wants to rid herself of a baby. New York has a Safe Haven Law, so ignorance can't be used as an excuse either.
Pennsylvania, likewise also has the Newborn Protection Act, which allows for a mother to drop off a newborn child up to 28 days at a police department, hospital or EMS station without fear of prosecution.

Desperation seems to wipe out all common sense and best choices for many.
I think there is much more to her story than we know. If she is mentally ill or addicted
I would be glad the baby is in safe hands now and she maybe has a place to help her if
she needs it. If she knows she could have been arrested, maybe that was her reasoning.

Well it could have been worse. Newborns have been thrown into garbage cans, dumpsters, through the grates of city sewer systems, off the roofs of tenements, off of bridges, left on the back seats of city buses, the last car of subway trains and even sold to whoever would even think to buy a newborn baby.

Is she the baby's mother? If it was just born it would seem surprising for the mom to be so active? I've never given birth so I don't know, but I'd think if it were me I'd be in bed afterwards.

I guess the baby surrender places are at hospitals and fire departments because of access to EMS people, but otherwise I'd think a baby box at a subway would be more convenient for people.
