Moving to a new residence...

I live in a senior assisted living facility. Have a great apartment with about 60 neighbors who mind their own business, but over the past 18 years have gotten to know many and their families. We have many activities if one wishes to partake thereof. We have stairs and elevators. Guess which I use. lol.
 

Where I live now is just about the exact opposite of where we need and where I want to be. Our house is single story but that's the only thing about it that's good for us oldsters, great big yard, within walking distance of nothing (we don't even have sidewalks, sigh), more and more things needing to be repaired, replaced, more and more work that we can no longer do ourselves. I want to move so much.
 

A new residence would have to include everything we have now. Room to have our "space", low-maintenance landscaping, a private outdoor area, convenience to goods and services, close proximity to plays and concerts, a quiet neighborhood, good neighbors and a master suite on the first floor.

Also, one of my biggest concerns these days is climate change after we've seen the recent flooding and the record heat in much of the country. We'd seriously considered the mountains of Western NC a couple of years ago but after seeing the devastation from Helene we gave up on that idea. So, I guess we won't be relocating anytime soon.

This is an old 2 apartment house on a fairly busy street. Built in 1923—I think. Over the years, many people have rented the upstairs apt. and what a mind blowing experience that has been. The 6’4’ young guy living upstairs now seems intelligent and very nice. From the heavy duty jackets of his I’ve seen in the communal hallway look like for fireman/rescue. Well there you have it

Actually, my condo is quite small as it’s two bedroom but only 855 ft.². It’s also not in a newer luxurious building as the building is 48 years old.

The lobby is really ugly and outdated with the original tile. I’m on the board and had visions originally of us being able to update the lobby and hallways. Unfortunately, a reserve study said that tile is good for another 20 years and I doubt I’ll be around by then or care if I am.

We have two buildings that altogether house 150 condos and we have many more pressing issues that we are spending our money on. But I live in the inside of my condo and not in the hallway, so I have come to accept that an upgrade in the common area is not in my future. M

If money was no, object I would live in a 55+ condo community. Although probably about half the people that live here are seniors because it’s great for senior living due to the location and design of the condos, which are all one story. All our rules are very kid unfriendly so we have very few kids in our complex which is one of the reasons I wanted to live here too.
 
When my husband was living we looked at property on the NC coast. Then one year there was a big flood with floating livestock and widespread damage. The land is barely above sea level for quite a distance inland. Later I was interested in the Asheville area and Helene, as you mentioned, took care of that.

That's too bad because I hear those areas are really beautiful.
 
We moved last year and found a home that had everything we wanted. We wanted to downsize, no stairs in the house, more rural but not isolated, back porch or patio, front porch, hardwood floors, relatively new construction, shop for Ron, less yard, and priced for us to buy outright with no mortgage.

We found everything we wanted! As an added bonus, we have amazing neighbors, we’re two long blocks from the little town area which has everything we routinely need. Grocery store, Ace hardware, liquor store, several restaurants with great food variety (American, Asian, bbq, pizza, coffee shop, even an ice cream/gelato/sandwich place!) car repair, farmers market, community center.

The town also has numerous local fairs, parades, gatherings of different kinds. It’s also closer to the grandkids. We couldn’t be happier.
 
I have no desire to move from my property, though my house no longer suites me. My house is nice but its a tri level, so about everything I do inside requires going up or down stairs. I have a beautiful back deck but never use it, prefer to sit out front.

If I could afford it I would replace my current home with a nice single story and have a covered front porch I could sit on.
 
For now, I'm happy where I am. Our house is a bit overlarge (2500 SF, 4 BR, 3 BA) for two people, but it's all useful. One bedroom is now a guest room, another is a toy/play room, another is my husband's office/second guest room.

This house is well suited for the 3-4 parties a year we host with 30+ people, and that's very important to me. Big kitchen, a dining room that seats 10 very comfortably, 12 if the crowd is friendly. :cool: Also a family room plus a living room. Mostly open, circular floor plan for the common areas where people gather, kitchen included. Great flow.

We likely won't move unless or until we're past party-throwing desire/ability, one of us passes, or we became seriously debilitated in some way.
