Mrs. Robinson...California Wildfires?

Lake County is among the eight that the news is saying is threatened by the wildfires. Can you give us the scoop? Fires there now? Evacuations?

We are surrounded! Unbelievable. 8-10 active wildfires burning. Two in this county but both on the other side of our lake. I have a new foster girl and she lives over there. She text her mom this morning and their home has been lost. This means my girl has lost everything she owns. She was brought here from school,so had only the clothes on her back. I asked CPS if they could ask her parents for some of her things-some parents will give them and some won`t. But CPS didn`t bother to ask. They better come up with some $$$$ to buy her clothes-I went out and bought her underwear, socks and toiletries the day after she got here but I can`t replace her entire wardrobe.

Anyway,we are safe here for now. My daughter and son in law live close to Santa Rosa and can see the smoke and flames from their house. So they have spent the day hosing down their house and property. It got really, really windy here last night and all of these fires were caused by downed power lines. Our "neighborhood" has all underground utilities-probably after this entire area burned in the 80s. So we are a little safer but nothing but dry grass for miles around us.

That doesn't sound good. That's a lot of trauma for a kid. Stay safe, and if they order you to evacuate, GO!

I'm a bit concerned about Whatsisname; they live on the side of the mountain. He's legally blind, and she "won't" drive. Hope she decides that "won't" isn't part of the vocabulary if it comes to evacuation.

If you feel comfortable PMing me his general location,I can PM you if his area becomes affected.

The fires are not near me but the sky is cloudy with smoke from the fires. Had to close the doors & windows.

The fire news is on most of the TV stations as we speak.

There's a few people that you and I both know that live in Napa Valley. I know you remember JohnB from WS. I'm FB friends with him and read that he's okay.

Mrs. R, hope you, your husband and daughter are safe, so sorry to hear about your foster girl, must be a lot for her to deal with too. Thinking of you.

Just read through the article and saw Glen Ellen mentioned. I know someone there so looked on FB and seems they've been evacuated but I don't know what happened to their house. They're ok though. So sad and I hope they didn't lose their home.

Thank goodness your friends are ok.. CC

Yes, that's the most important thing but I hope they didn't lose their home. Over the years Ive seen post after post about how they've been remodeling and fixing up their house...themselves. A lot of work went into their little home. I truely hope it wasn't damaged.

Havent heard anything because phone lines and power is down in that area. Someone posted for them just saying they were ok.

Wishing the best for all of our members in California and all those folks affected by these fires, hard to even comprehend all the devastation there. It seems California is always getting hit with horrific floods, fires, etc. :(

Ha! Got an email from Whatsisname this morning telling me that since the local paper doesn't publish on Sunday and Monday, they had no idea there were fires. He went out this morning to get the paper and smelled the smoke. Said not to worry because according to sheriff, the fire is "zero percent contained." LOL It must be safe so far because he was not even a little concerned.

Last I heard there were 17 who lost their lives in the fires. Hope Mrs. R and her family are still safe.

This mornings news said this may become the worst disaster to hit Northern California in decades....and with high winds, low humidity, and no rain in the forecast, it may well continue for days.

Actually the weather inversion that caused the low humidity/high temps/high winds has already ended. However, there is now a low front coming in that will also have gusty winds, but the humidity will be getting closer to normal and temps moderating quite a bit.

This is our CA fire season. October is always historically the worst month of the year. We get no rain for six months so even the smallest spark can be dangerous in high winds. The rainy season doesn't officially begin until November, but there's a small chance of rain next week.

Santa Rosa was once a small town, not too long ago, but has turned into a major commuter suburban town so with the residential and commercial build-up, it was very vulnerable on High Fire Danger days, what we call "Red Flag Warnings". Because it is built right next to a major north-south freeway, big fires can disrupt transit and commerce.

In dry years we Californians worry about summer drought. In wet years we worry about spring floods because the loss of vegetation means the rains cause burnt out hillsides to turn into sheets of mud and runoff causes local rivers to rise.

Historically people built near rivers for easy transport of goods/trade. So older towns/cities' downtown streets are often on flood zones.

Fire can devastate one side of a street, but leave the other untouched. There are always people who ignore evacuation orders. Everyone in CA knew we would have a bad fire season in Fall 2017 because of all the 2016 rains. Tremendous underbrush growth everywhere. It all turns into fire fuel after 6 months of no-rain hot days.

I haven't heard anything from Mrs. R. My CA relatives are okay so far. This is the worst CA wildfire ever, I guess, according to TWC. Be safe everyone. This is worrisome.

Hi everybody! We are fine! But our cell phones have been down and internet has been very sketchy since Monday. Those with cable have not even had TV, but we have satellite so have been OK there. Evacuations started last night on both ends of our county-besides another side that was evacuated Sunday due to the fire there. Now the Napa valley fire is coming over the hill to our county and another fire is coming over the other. Still not to close to us,but we have bags packed and ready to go if need be. Don`t want to have to worry about clothing, papers and valuables at a time when all I would really care about would be gathering up pets. Sleep with my phone right next to me as even if it`s not working,I still get all Nixle and Red alerts that will tell us if there is a fire near us. Really helps you sleep better.
