Mutts or pure breeds???

Your furry friend, it is a 57 variety mutt or an expensive pure breed? Would you pay the big bucks to get the exact breed of animal you want, or is finding it roaming around in the back yard, okay?

yep all of our dogs in the past have been pedigree dogs.. ( German shepherd, Border collie and Jack Russell) ..

.... my daughter paid a lot of money for her labradodles .. her chihuhua was a rescue pup so she didn't pay for her... ..but she's in the process of looking for another companion for her eldelry dog.. and she will pay for the breed she wants.

I've had both but I wouldn't pay a lot of money for any pet. I had a pure bred German Shepherd with Royal lineage and trained him with the U.S. Air Force Police and that was only $350. I've also had dogs from the pound who were equally loved and trained well.

Many years ago when I working at the vet clinic, I saw a dog across the 4 lane wandering in the woods. It looked like a Bearded Collie, "Beardie" so I told the vet I was going over to get it. After managing the cars, I got her leashed and at the clinic. She was a mess.

We chipped her and found her owner. Turns out she was the National Champion for Bearded Collies here in the US. Worth thousands of dollars, has a big long official prize winning name. I called her Chelsea. She was returned to her happy owner.

We never paid for any of our dogs, given to us as unwanted pets. Our last dog BILL was a beautiful boy. Came to us as a puppy as the mother had a litter of 6 and it was too much for the owner to handle. He was part Kelpie and Samoyed. We had him for 10 years but had to have him put down because of cancer.

Some folks see pets as a possession or fashion accessory that helps them to project/reinforce a certain image or lifestyle.

Some folks are more interested in a pet’s personality and compatibility as an adopted member of the family.

Growing up on a farm, most of our pets just appeared and decided to stay or were given to us.

At this point in my life the only pet that I would consider is one that has been orphaned or displaced due to the original owner’s illness or death.

Agree 100% with your first line , you only need to be in busy areas on weekends to see that @Aunt Bea and the fashion accessories dogs are wearing like sunnies / hats / fancy coats even in extreme hot weather.

Most are seen out on weekends at dog parks / walking areas along rivers / park
lands …due to owners working.

During covid lockdowns in Aust many got dogs as an excuse to be seen / allowed outside their homes …..then 100’s of dogs and other pets were dumped at shelters after restrictions were lifted …..:cry:how cruel ..

Strays, rescues, dog pound pups is my normal choice. I do have a pure breed right now, but I would not have chosen him. He belonged to our best family friend who died of a heart attack.

He is a black chow, a big boy, a hairy boy and the sweetest thing ever. My two littles are the ones to fear a bite. It is just at this age and my health problems I can't give him the care he deserves, walks, dog parks, chase. It is all I can do to keep up with the shedding and grooming.

No dogs but cats. Izzi found us. A filthy two pound bundle with everything that could be wrong with a cat. Vet told me not to waste my money. Maine Coin but will never grow to breed size as she was starved as kitten.
Foxi, A pure bred Turkish Van ended up with my parents for 21 years. No pets allowed as we travelled constantly. My sisters beau found a kitten wondering on a country road. He turned into a beauty and an RV traveller.

Agreed, those trendy snobs with the purse dogs make me wanna throw up.

I’ve noticed when down in the city there are more and more dogs in large shopping centres , and no I don’t believe they are assistance dogs as they usually wear a brightly coloured harness.

Many of the dogs are in shopping trolleys …I’m not sure if rules are changed regarding health and hygiene partially in supermarkets.

Bunnings is a very large hardware chain shop that only recently introduced a “a huge pets department“https://www.bunnings.com.au/product...MIy6zewNLaigMV_xGDAx1zfgnaEAAYASAAEgJoW_D_BwE it’s full of dogs in trolleys on weekends…… ( mainly designer breeds ) I’ve even been restricted from using the toilet in Bunnings beacuse its being used by owners to pamper dogs

I find today's dogs that are more than one breed, are a lot healthier than pure breads... Hust my observation...
Good point, I knew people who had expensive pure breds that were constantly sick and needed constant expensive and time consuming care. I had a mixed breed mutt once that got into everything and ate my chocolate cake. Dog was like a Timex watch. Nothing affected him.....lol.

We've only had 2 dogs that we loved much. Both were mutts and frankly they were fantastic. 1 was Suzi she was a German Shepherd mix, and she was DH's dog, she liked us all but she really loved DH. We had 3 small kids and she was fine with them. Our yard front and back was fenced the front was chain link and the front yard was usually full of neighbors little kids. So one day a strange kid came along on the sidewalk Suzi jumped along the fence and one of her claws got stuck and that kid jerked on the fence and jerked Suzi's claw out. I hustled the kids into the back yard and closed the patio doors. Then I called suzi...crying for all she was worth I picked all 50 or so pounds and sat down in the rocking chair, she laid her head on my chest and shoulder and I rocked her to sleep. She knew I was mama, and was a real good girl.

2. was Ginger, she was also a mix of Lab and shepherd, but she was the kids dog, she was always looking out for the kids, . We'd take the kids to a pond so they could swim , Ginger would right there. If one kid left the other two Ginger would follow. When we first got her she would cower at the drop of a hat, but she stopped doing that when she learned we were not going to hurt her. We lived in a company town and one day there were a couple of guys working on the outside of the duplex, I had tied her outside because she couldn't go to school with the kid. I'd leave her outside to do her duty for half an hour or so, then I'd get her inside, this day I went out to get her and the guy said "Lady what are you doing to this dog that she cowers so ?" I was so embarrassed and I said the first thing that popped out of my mouth "I beat her every day and twice on sunday!". As far as I know she never cowered again. I suspect that the man reminded her of someone in her past that we didn't know about, since she was about 6 months old when we got her as a rescue like Suzi.

If we had a dog here it would have to be a small one (rules of the park) and would have to be walked twice a day and we simply are not up to that. So we have the kitty we love her too, and she is strictly an indoor cat.

When fostering my last Doberman, I asked for the dog no one else wanted. The one that everyone else just passed by.
Of course, part of her ear was bit off, and her coat was kind of torn up...not smooth and shiny. But, she was perfect for me. She watched over me and I watched over her.
