My Apple Tree Got Mowed Down

If you're going to save the apple tree, try putting a tomato cage over the butchered tree with red or yellow strips of cloth tied on top. If someone can't see that, they shouldn't be mowing.

And get a new tree from that guy and make sure he plants it as well. It's not easy planting a tree (at my age anyway).

Be specific about your replacement apple tree.
Find a picture of an apple tree similar to the one they ruined, send it to him, and to the store or nursery you've located it.
ie: Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.

That way you won't be disappointed in what he buys for you, and he'll know exactly what you're expecting from him.

I just checked my messages in NextDoor. He did respond apologizing and offering to get a new one. It wouldn't be the tree I raised from seed, though.

True but at least he’s taken responsibility and showing concern. The woman should have asked. It’s clearly marked as being a significant plant. I think your other tree might make it. It will be ridiculously slow growing at first but should take off next year. I’d cover any new growth over the wintertime just to stay on the safe side. Even a heavy dose of mulch will work.

The fruit type and quality isn't a big concern for me. Just having a tree to replace the one on the front lawn the former owners removed.

On a more hopeful note, the apple I had for breakfast had three sprouting seeds inside. They are now in repose in some potting soil. I had started another apple from seed, but for some reason got mildew on the leaves.

Hearing the grass was kind of high, she probably took your poor tree as some kind of weed. I do think a better barrier will be needed in the future.
I was thinking the same thing - another layer or two of bricks. I still think since the original lawn guy knew about it, he should have told her. I don't know where he was while she was mowing, or why he was letting his girfriend do his work. I don't look out, trusting he's doing his job.

Just to add in some humor, :)

I might suggest that perhaps stacking 2 (or even 3?)

tires, might be needed and more effective.;)

Possibly this isn't solely humor,
when the mowers are in a rush, or otherwise not likely to be taking extra care.:(

It's good to hear you are starting some other seeds, Deb!(y)🤩

You should be able to trust them to do their job. Sadly you can't often.

I agree. And, the leaves of a young apple tree, as opposed to any nuisance type of plant or weed,
would be obvious to someone with a basic knowledge of landscaping, plants, yard trees, etc;

but not to some people without any of that, or those just interested in getting the mowing done in as little time as possible.
