My debit card number was hacked!!

The only reason I carry a debit card is for access to cash at the bank. With planning, I could keep it home and just take it along when needed. Easier said than done. My CC has tap; my debit card doesn’t.

Years ago, I had a couple of bank debit cards "compromised" at Walmart. So when I go there, I just pay by check, and sometimes cash. I always use my credit card to order from Amazon (never had a problem). Also to pay some bills once in a awhile. Never had a problem.

No thank you, not for me, especially after listening to numerous people in the news who were hacked and that the bank that they used would not refund their money. However, I do have telephone banking set up.
Even if you dont set up online banking your account can still be hacked. For me online banking offers a lot of conveniences, but I can understand if you are hesitant. I think the most important thing is to keep a very close eye on things.

I feel the same, and my CC card is from a different institution than where I have savings/checking at. In my opinion a debit card is a direct conduit to your checking and savings accounts, no way do I want to open that gate for potential theft or fraud.
I agree about the debit card. I may be doing it wrong but for convenience all my stuff is with the same bank. Also Im lazy and dont want to keep track of multiple things. I get one email with status every morning. Whatever shows up gets scrutinized and if its legit paid off immediately. I keep my card balances at zero.

Not sure about debit cards since I dont have one but I can block my cards and unblock them easily when I want to use them.
FYI. Auto charges still go thru even if the card is blocked.

I actually inquired about a debit card at my bank a few months ago. I asked how secure they were. The branch manager suggested I open an account just for card use and keep only a few hundred dollars in it, then I can transfer money from another account into that when needed. Seems she side-stepped on that - didn't really answer the question.

She did actually.
Link a debit card to an account that only has enough in it that you can afford to lose.

A word of warning. That sounds fine but since the balance is low you will have to be extra careful keeping track of your purchases.
If you go over the bank will charge you an overdraft fee. FYI. My bank charges $34 per transaction, with a max 3 per business day, totaling $102. No fee for ones under $5. But still. Not good.

Does your bank offer prepaid credit cards that can be reloaded. The ones with low balances like people use for their kids.

I don't think credit/debit cards are way more prone to hackers than walking around with a wallet, full of cash, is prone to robbers. I've gone completely cash free for at least ten years. Yes, I could get hacked, but my wallet could also be stolen. At least with using a credit/debit card, there is the possibility of getting reimbursed. Somebody swipes the cash in your wallet, kiss it goodbye.

You might be surprised how far they can get from any of your checks. I have a number of bills that I can pay just by entering numbers off any check.
Really? I didn't know that was possible - very good to know. I'm not a check writer (other than gifts), but DH is still in the habit and doesn't care to break it. I worry over mailed checks being stolen.

Darn. Today I realized I had not yet gotten my new card. So I called the bank call line. Interestingly I got the SAME operater as last time. She checked the order. Turns out it was never sent up the line from where SHE had put in the order. She could not understand how that happened. She put in the order again.
I wanted to confirm I would not be getting two cards..no I will not

I always use credit card. The only time I use debit card is to withdraw cash at the ATM, but using cash is quite rare for me these days.

Went to the pharmacy the other day to pick up meds. The lady told me my debit card was declined. She did not know why and suggested I go to the bank. Luckily I had another way to pay.
Anyway, next stop bank. She checked for me and said there were two recent charges for some sports betting thing. Nope, not me. So she suspended my card (no future transations) and put in for me to get a new card and new number. They put the two disputed charges back into my account.
I did have some cash at home, but I took out $75 to hold me over. In case I go grocery shopping before new card comes.
So, this is a reminder to check your statements regularly. I usually did weekly, but going to do it more often once new card is active
I'm so sorry that happened to you Marie, but glad you were able to get the fraudulent charges removed immediately. I only have two debit cards, which I rarely use. I used one at the beginning of the week just to keep it activated. All my cards are protected in aluminum plus in an RFID pouch. I have alerts on all my accounts. If over a certain amount is spent., could be as low as $20, I get an email. Plus I log into my accounts pretty frequently. I haven't gotten paper statements in years.

My new card just came today. NO..you all cannot have the number LOL I will only say it has a MasterCard logo. I am going to be much more careful how and where I use it in the future.

I stick with my own bank atm whenever possible because I’ve been dinged for out of network fees in the past.

These days I only use an atm a couple times each year to top up my little stash of cash.
bottom line for me is , i would never ever use a debit card where i could use a credit card , except for taking cash at a bank
Me either MJ. And as mentioned previously, I very rarely use my debit card to get cash at the bank.

got a message from my credit card company yesterday they declined a bunch of transactions they flagged as possible fraud .

sure enough when i called them there were maybe 5 or six thousand dollars in multiple transactions for stub hub tickets .

luckily the banks fraud controls picked up on it and declined them

This has probably already been posted: I NEVER use debit card anywhere but the bank, inside at the counter if possible. Skimmers have been found in ATMs. I know people who use Debit card at gas stations! They are NUTS.
Always use a charge card! If it gets hacked minimal damage can occur. Just pay off the entire amount each month to avoid interest charges.

I've been hacked once, bank actually caught it (Questionable transaction) and issued card same day. I have a budget app and review daily to see if it checks out with my bank account.

Never have had anymore issues, even if I do use it online, store and gas station! 😅😅😅😅
