Even if you dont set up online banking your account can still be hacked. For me online banking offers a lot of conveniences, but I can understand if you are hesitant. I think the most important thing is to keep a very close eye on things. No thank you, not for me, especially after listening to numerous people in the news who were hacked and that the bank that they used would not refund their money. However, I do have telephone banking set up.
I agree about the debit card. I may be doing it wrong but for convenience all my stuff is with the same bank. Also Im lazy and dont want to keep track of multiple things. I get one email with status every morning. Whatever shows up gets scrutinized and if its legit paid off immediately. I keep my card balances at zero.I feel the same, and my CC card is from a different institution than where I have savings/checking at. In my opinion a debit card is a direct conduit to your checking and savings accounts, no way do I want to open that gate for potential theft or fraud.
She did actually.I actually inquired about a debit card at my bank a few months ago. I asked how secure they were. The branch manager suggested I open an account just for card use and keep only a few hundred dollars in it, then when needed I can transfer money from another account to that when needed. Seems she side-stepped on that - didn't really answer the question.
A word of warning. That sounds fine but since the balance is low you will have to be extra careful keeping track of your purchases.I actually inquired about a debit card at my bank a few months ago. You might be surprised how far they can get from any of your checks. I have a number of bills that I can pay just by entering numbers off any check. And people wonder why I don't have "plastic".
Really? I didn't know that was possible - very good to know. I'm not a check writer (other than gifts), but DH is still in the habit and doesn't care to break it. I worry over mailed checks being stolen. You might be surprised how far they can get from any of your checks. I have a number of bills that I can pay just by entering numbers off any check.
been there , done that. ha ha haDuh.... now that I think about it, that's how I pay my CC bills. Funds are withdrawn directly from my checking account. Guess I set them up so long ago that I'd blanked on the process.

I'm so sorry that happened to you Marie, but glad you were able to get the fraudulent charges removed immediately. I only have two debit cards, which I rarely use. I used one at the beginning of the week just to keep it activated. All my cards are protected in aluminum plus in an RFID pouch. I have alerts on all my accounts. If over a certain amount is spent., could be as low as $20, I get an email. Plus I log into my accounts pretty frequently. I haven't gotten paper statements in years.Went to the pharmacy the other day to pick up meds. The lady told me my debit card was declined. She did not know why and suggested I go to the bank. Luckily I had another way to pay.
Anyway, next stop bank. She checked for me and said there were two recent charges for some sports betting thing. Nope, not me. So she suspended my card (no future transations) and put in for me to get a new card and new number. They put the two disputed charges back into my account.
I did have some cash at home, but I took out $75 to hold me over. In case I go grocery shopping before new card comes.
So, this is a reminder to check your statements regularly. I usually did weekly, but going to do it more often once new card is active
Check with your online banking app to see if you can turn it off when not neededA week ago, I took my debit card out of my wallet and will only carry if/when I plan to go to the bank. This thread has been a good wake-up call.
I stick with my own bank atm whenever possible because I’ve been dinged for out of network fees in the past.
These days I only use an atm a couple times each year to top up my little stash of cash.
Me either MJ. And as mentioned previously, I very rarely use my debit card to get cash at the bank.bottom line for me is , i would never ever use a debit card where i could use a credit card , except for taking cash at a bank
Just found it on my bank's website. Thanks so much, Aunt Bea!Check with your online banking app to see if you can turn it off when not needed
My Bank of America debit and credit cards offer that feature along with a variety of alerts.
