My new mantra

Dave and I have always tried to be careful with our money. As a result, we have a comfortable retirement. We were hoping to take some pretty nice trips this year. Well, clearly that's not happening. So the other day, Dave was trying to decide if some gadget or other was worth the money, and I said to him, "What the heck else are we gonna spend our money on?" He bought the gadget. Because it's true -- because of Covid, we don't eat out much, we can't go on a trip, we're stuck at home. So yeah, maybe we can eat steak a little more often.

Never having much money, everytime I considered buying something, I'd ask myself, "Is this a NEED or a WANT?" I'buy it ONLY if it was a need.
UNLESS it was a book, clay, a tool, or something for my SOUL! That takes priority!
But Carol? I'm glad for you! Think it was Nakita Khrushchev who said, "Life is short. Live it up!"

We too, have been pretty much stuck at home this year, and saving some money. If and When this virus issue is finally resolved, we will probably take a week long vacation to Las Vegas...by then, we can pretend to be "high rollers".

We have not ventured out of our county (the second smallest in Florida) since the CV came to the world. Restaurants have been seldom and only for take out. At 86 and 85 we are those old folks that have to be extra careful. The only place I have gone to is the supermarket, once to Loew's, the barber shop and the gas station. My hair is getting woolly again.

There are things that I would like to have done inside our condo, but they are not urgent and I am not ready to have workers come in yet.

Since we're renovating, we've decided to buy what we want this time. We built the house 40+ years ago and renovated about 20 years ago. Both times we did everything we could to save money on the projects. This will be the last time we update this house, so why not make it the way we prefer? Like everyone else, we're spending more time at home, so why not make it more enjoyable?

Carolfromtexas, What did you buy?

I like having money in the bank. But I also like to spend money. I love my possessions. And why not? I scrimped and saved to get them.
Don't remember what gadget it was at that point. But today we went to Trader Joe's and Williams Sonoma just to poke around. Love Trader Joe's! We bought a new cutting board at WS. It was expensive. But it sure was nice. Dave is an amateur gourmet chef, so why the hell not? Besides, out current cutting board is 20 years old, at least. I think we've gotten our money's worth. And it had a great backstory. What the heck else are we going to spend our money on?!F09D6880-FDB2-474C-AB91-27E992B36270.jpeg

Like everyone else we are mostly staying home except for a million trips to home depot and Lowes. We are spending all our money on this stupid money pit of a house. The estimate for a new roof was 9000. I am getting another estimate. It’s a simple roof, that’s too much.

When I was working I took saving for retirement very seriously.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that retirement has arrived and it's time to loosen up a little before it's too late.

My point exactly! Hard to break 45 years of habits, though. When I was in high school (or maybe it was college) I was in the play "You Can't Take it with You." Memories!

LOL!! You sound like an old friend of mine [now deceased] he used to say that too me [well something similar] all the time. Of course he was always one of those that thought since I divorced 40+ years ago, and never had kids ....I was "rollin' in it" :)

I'm considering a "car' these days , haven't owned one in 30+ years ...... thinking it might be easier to enter & exit ? But if i do, should I just get a car ? Or go for something "nifty" ? ......."Nifty" usually cost a tad more.

What do you need nifty for? If everyone's hidden away in their homes from a virus they're not gonna see it. Do you just need one to get around & run errands? You have to decide whether you just need comfort or if you need to look fabulous when you pull up to the post office or wherever. LOL

Always go for "nifty" at this age. I bought a nifty one three years ago and I've managed to rack up a whole 9,000 miles so far. :ROFLMAO:

The only thing that keeps me from buying a nifty vehicle is the maintenance.

I love to see cars that are kept in showroom condition but I know deep down in my bones that I'm too cheap and too lazy to take care of one.

With all respect ........ I want it just for me. I really don't care who may or may not like what I choose ....... ;)

Well then that's what you should do. Do something for you. It's not like we can take the crap with us. If I could afford it I'd buy myself a hotrod just for the hell of it. 😁

I would like a new car as well, sigh, getting a new roof instead. This is the wisdom of old age. 😂. Wants vs needs, we have learned the difference.
