I'd have advised my daughter to run away from this family. Run far, run fast and don't look back. Life brings plenty of drama and heartache without any assistance from a difficult, unpleasant, toxic mother-in-law and a husband who doesn't stand up to her.

Ten years on and your daughter is as beautiful as on her wedding day and your SIL is looking better and healthier than he did before. Getting away from his mother seems to have agreed with him.

I foolishly bought a toy gun yesterday for a cousins son, one needing lots of batteries and making loads of noise whilst shooting soft plastic rings out now and again, (unfortunately it wasn't until I got home I realised it was for a child twice his age, with too many small parts to worry about for anyone younger).

Therefore I am currently in possession of said toy gun, and I can tell you my mates German Shepherd dog was most intimidated by it, so it could give your SIL's mother a fright! :)
 
Well, yesterday my daughter had our whole family for Father's day, the only exception was her MIL. She did give my husband a gift though. She gave him a life-alert package. She said it fell off a truck. She found it and thought maybe at our age me and my hubby could use it and all we had to do was sign up and pay a fee monthly. I asked her if her hubby had one and she said "No I wouldn't waste a penny to save his life. Hopefully, by the time I get home I'll find him dead" She is so cruel.

So was the MIL there or not? I'm confused by your post. If she wasn't there, who gave you the life alert package?

That’s really insulting of her to give your husband a Life Alert. Or maybe it’s more insulting that she didn’t care enough about you to gift you with one. Whatever her thought process, it was insulting.

Does that poor man know the nasty things she says about him and if he hears her, how does he react.

I still struggle to understand what might be going on here, but it should maybe be of no surprise that some folks take pleasure in causing discomfort to others, (sort of "psychological playing games", and I'd guess those types of people trust no one and assume everyone else is guilty of playing similar games all the time so they're fully justified no matter how much of a pain they are or how much pain they cause,...)

"I've so called mates like this", and it should be remembered they've nothing else about them you'd call a personality, so being essentially bullied by them is all anyone can expect!
 
If it were me wearing your shoes I'd avoid this woman like the disease she is. Someone saying to me what she said to you regarding her husband, would have gotten an eye roll, a handing back of the "gift" and a reply like, "No thank you. This conversation is over. Please excuse me." and walked away.

That your SIL doesn't have the cajones to tell his mother that she needs to behave appropriately in his home or she won't be welcome there is something he should have worked out with a therapist long ago. That your daughter doesn't demand he do so is on her. That you or other guests permit her to spread her poison your way is on you.

If people are hell bent on being nasty you can't stop them. You can, however, control whether to give them an audience or be in their sphere. Relative or not.

They are both in their mid-seventies. They went to High School together and she got pregnant and said the baby was his. They had a daughter who also ignores the father.My SIL and his older sister look nothing alike and will never take a DNA test which makes me wonder if he is really her father or if he was the only one who would marry her. My SIL does look a lot like the father but not his sister.
 
I just got a call from my daughter. She had to go to a dance competition today for her daughter They will be gone until Saturday. They are staying at a beautiful hotel on the Beach. I was soo excited for them to relax and enjoy quality family time. She just called me that they had arrived. Then she gave me this news. Before they left this afternoon her MIL showed up. She told them she wanted to surprise them. Then she told them she added an extra bedroom to the room they had reserved. She said she pretended to be my daughter so they added it to my daughters bill. They didn't ask her to go and I was excited for them to just relax and enjoy. Of course, my SIL never told her she had no right to do that. His mother never paid attention to him so he never reprimands her. Her husband is dying and she left him alone. Hospice goes every day and she is paying a woman she met to sleep there every night. I will never understand her. It is going to cost my SIL and daughter over $200.extra everyday.

People can't walk on you if you don't lie down.

Assuming you're getting the straight story, your daughter would be well advised to drag her husband to a therapist. If he won't go, she should go alone. Why she's so willing to be a victim might be interesting for her to discover.
 
So the M-i-L turns up before they leave for the Beach resort,...tells them she's fraudulently booked herself an extra room... and the daughter doesn't ring the hotel immediately and tell there's been a Mistake... why ?...how did she get it added to her daughter-in-laws' bill without knowing what card she used to book it ?..It's not like she turned up at the hotel and the M-I-L was already there ...sounds odd to me
