My Son's friend was murdered

I hate to say this, but this thread‘s tragic story seems to be the way that most of the big cities of the US are headed. Out here in California the crime of shoplifting has been redefined. If a thief steals less than $950 worth of goods it‘s a misdemeanor, the equivalent of Jay Walking — no jail. If there ever was an invitation to steal, that is It. A large portion of our famous San Quentin has now been set aside as a counseling center where I suppose many inmates will persuaded into leading a life of good will and honesty. Good luck with that.

A few days ago a boy my son grew up with was murdered.3 Guys were trying to steal his car and one of them shot him in the head. For the first time, I am happy that his Mom and Dad have already passed away and don't have to feel the pain of losing a child. I have been crying all day.
On, that is so tragic!! I'm sorry.

I've tried reaching out to my son. I sent him an email and left a message on his phone, but I am not sure he still uses either of them.
well Sassy... if you were able to leave a message on his phone then he's still using it..otherwise it would have been disabled and you wouldn't have been able to leave a message. Hopefully he'll contact you after getting your message..🤞

Jail time for theft is possible, it is not like jaywalking. If you are saying it is not imposed, even for days, that often, some statistics would help.

Glad to oblige …
“Google “Shoplifting in San Francisco” and you will find more than 100,000 hits. And you will find lots of YouTube videos, where you can watch a single thief, or an entire gang, walk into an SF Walgreens or CVS and empty the shelves. Most walk in, go about their pilfering, and then walk out, though at least one thief rode their bike into the store and departed the same way, carefully navigating their two-wheeler down a narrow aisle.”
”Why is shoplifting so rampant? Because state law holds that stealing merchandise worth $950 or less is just a misdemeanor, which means that law enforcement probably won’t bother to investigate, and if they do, prosecutors will let it go.”
