India. The city of Nagpur, which escaped the worst of the pandemic last year, was the first city to be overwhelmed by the virus in the most recent wave. The rate of infection and the number of deaths continues to reach new heights, prompting authorities to convert busses into hearses to carry the dead en masse.
All hospitals in the city have run out of spare ventilators and oxygen supplies are at critical levels.
The strain in the public system has been so chronic that patients have been forced to share beds.
