I had an interview at the mall today. I got there ahead of the school traffic and five o'clock funnies, AKA NJ rush hour. So I had a few hours to relax. First stop was a milkshake then window shopping. Something that boggled my mind was a plain lavender sweater at Lord and Taylor. I picked it up to look at...$180:eek: Are they insane? What was it made of? Woven gold? Even if money were no object jeez...

Okay a shirt for my son Aeropostle is closing and 75% off. Buy 3 get 2 free at Claires so earrings for me and my daughter. Then I got to Barnes and Noble. That store is my downfall. I just brought home twenty books from the used book shelves at the library. But a new one on the history of black hair care and another is the memoirs of an Atlanta EMS driver. Oh and the wooden sign for a shelf " You Discover You Have Wings When You Open a Book". I can skip clothes, food even, but I NEED my reading material:D:D:D
 

Hard to get through Marshals or any place that sells a variety of kitchen and household things. Had a hard time finding a new ironing board cover (yeah, I know people rarely iron anymore) found one at Marshals yesterday!
 

Marshalls and TJ Maxx are hard for me too. No I don't need another pair of sneakers...or bath salts, but they are sandalwood so maybe...oh and dog toys...the way they chew them up can always use new dog toys...one for each or Sophie will bully him...whoa sandalwood rose body scrub? Yes yes!

I have this weird quirk where I will buy tools I don't know how to use. When the family was all gathered here my son in law said " Too bad there isn't a circular saw here, I'd fix that. " I said " I have a circular saw!" Then he said " You know how to use a circular saw?" My son said " She doesn't know how to use it but she has it!" Then everyone laughed. I said " Well now he can use it & it's here, so there!"
 
Awww unspoken rule...to be manly you have to be able to work any tool you have. Something I love is the thingie that can drill screws. Bookshelves, desks, you name the furniture and wood type and it works.

Ah, you girls are showing off now! I am somewhat "power tool challenged"-- hammers, screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches are my speed.(ha-ha) Wish there were beginners courses for some of these things, oh heck, I'd probably cut off my hand or something. Probably not knowing is safer at my age. But I do admire you for trying. I wish I had mastered a few plumbing basics when my husband wanted to show me!

About 30 years ago it was like I was starring in my own 'I Love Lucy' episode. I was trying to replace the toilet guts. I did not realize that the place we rented was SO OLD and dilapidated that you could not shut the water off from next to the wall. It was my first toilet job, so I unknowingly unscrewed everything with that wrench thing and water began to spurt up into the air. I did not know the landlord's phone number , my husband did. So, I had to call my husband at work who had to come home and find the landlord's phone number and the landlord came over and shut off the water. I've had a couple of 'episodes' but nothing life altering or loss of limb thank God.
 
Lol..Carla....I just have to get in on this one....I love power tools..and I have a bunch....but I stay away from saws of all kinds. I like the electric power drills, but have to read the directions every time to put it in reverse to back out the screws. lol

hahaha, BW, that is funny...not long ago I was helping my daughter, she had a new fridge and we unhook the water line to the old one and there was no cut off for it, water was spurting out the plastic line everywhere...we finally doubled it back and put a heavy rubber band around it...that is called 'Southern Engineering' ...I use a lot of duct tape too.

I have done things that were so dumb, I would hate to admit all of them. I have had lots of crisises since hubby passed. At first, I felt very defeated but then I learned to focus on my successes and not be so hard on myself. One of the first things I did was get up on a ladder to change a bulb on an outdoor light. I bought what looked like it not realizing it was a sodium lamp and I bought a mercury lamp. I put it in and it began smoking like crazy--I quickly unscrewed it but burned out the baluster. Like you, I do try to do things and if I fail, I consider it a learning experience.

Yes it is very hard to begin learning things with no help. Nowadays I generally google 'how to.." before I start a project :)

Hahaha but I am sure, not funny at the time. Duct tape. What a wonderful invention that was!
 
After trying numerous times to sell my unwanted items at my garage sale and on Craig's list with poor results I packed it all up and decided to take it to a new Salvation Army store that just opened up recently. Feeling really good about getting rid of my items I decided to check out the store itself. It was clean,neatly arranged and everything marked. I broke my favorite Pyrex casserole lid a few months ago and was just to order a replacement on Amazon for $11.95 and there it was for $1.50. I couldn't believe my eyes. So I shopped on. The end result was, the lid, 2 almost brand new night gowns, 4 CD's. Books for the grand kids, a picture frame and a basket to display the small pumpkins I grew this summer. When I got home the hubby said he thought I was getting rid of the stuff not adding to the pile. Needless to say, I will be shopping there again. Oh, and Wednesday is senior citizens day. Half off of everything. I was one happy old lady.

Several years ago my swamp cooler was making a godawful noise and performing poorly in the hottest week of the year. Plumbers I called could work me in next week, maybe -- by that time I would have roasted alive. SO, I looked up on Google and there was a website called the Swamp Cooler Queen where a nice older lady walked you through (in simple English, not plumber-ese -- i.e., "the round thing sticking out of the right side of the squirrel cage") what exactly to do when you were having such and such problems with your cooler (they are really very simple contraptions). I did exactly what she said, making many trips up and down off the roof, to see the next step, and I was surprised and absolutely delighted when it WORKED. I fixed it myself and was extremely proud of myself!
 
Good for you Butterfly! I guess sometimes necessity is a good teacher! You are talking about an AC? I never heard it called a swamp cooler. We only need it a couple months of the year, but when that humidity rises, I cannot tolerate it!

A swamp cooler is a sort of air conditioner (it cools off the air by evaporation -- also called an evaporative cooler). They aren't any good except in places that are very dry -- like the middle of a desert. They are pretty effective here as long as it doesn't get above mid-90s or so. They are a lot cheaper to run, and are pretty much the cooler of choice around here, unless you can afford to run a refrigerated air system. Most people still use the evap coolers in homes. Pretty much only used in the desert southwest, where I live.
