NASA - Historic Discovery of 7 New Planets Not Far From Earth - Some Habitable

If these planets are nearly 40 light years away, NASA's efforts should be channeled into sending radio wave messages in their direction and waiting for the response in 80 years. Still it is interesting news and each new discovery of this type helps us to understand the universe better and I hope, to appreciate our home planet more and more.

Another way to put that Warrigal is, the Trappist-1 system, where the planets are, is 227 Trillion miles away. It would take 39 years to get there traveling at the speed of light which we don't have anything that travels that fast...yet.

I'm not a fan of 'other planets out there with life'.

We will never find out anyway.

I'm a firm believer that Earth is a fluke in the universe. We have liquid water and an atmosphere and just the right distance from the sun. It's a temporary thing anyway. Eventually the Sun will expand and consume the Earth. We are simply in a phase and humans weren't always hear. We are a blip in the history of the universe.

NASA is always finding 'habitable planets'. That's how they keep their job.

Nasa has discovered 3 out of 7 of the planets in the "Habitable Zone"...an acceptable distance from the star that they orbit. There are possibly 5 that support life but 3 for sure. With that said, there are no proof-specifics for what forms of life there are....specifically for human species or beings capable of making moral choices, having intellect, emotion, and a will.

The Habitable zone is only one criterion.

There has to be an atmosphere to protect from the harmful rays of the sun (incidentally that's why they don't go back to the moon, no atmosphere) radiation.
Then there has to be liquid water.
And then the orbit has to be just right.

I have been studying this since I was 12 years old. At one time I was an adherent to the theory that there are other worlds out there with life.

No longer. It's not a lead pipe cinch. Life is a mystery. Although we know the building blocks, science has yet to create life on Earth from scratch.

So even if everything is in place. The idea that life might exist is not certain.

I respect your post Camper. You are certainly more knowledgable than I, regarding this subject. I would like to say, "We'll just have to wait and see" but since this isn't going to happen in our lifetime then that question is obsolete. Thank you for your interesting facts. Makes sense.

By the time NASA does or does not find life around Trappist1, I'll be in heaven, Camper. No disappointments there. :)

Does that mean new worlds for humanity to destroy? And if there is life there, should they be gearing up for war when 'we' arrive and 'take them out' because they have what we want and we don't play well with others?

Don't say that Debbie because I think my soul mate might be living there...all the Mr. Perfects have been taken on this planet :D;)

lara said "all the Mr. Perfects have been taken on this planet". There was an episode on the rosanne show once where jackie said' well look at dan he is perfect, whereby rosanne says' well he didnt come that way'
