NASCAR bans fans from flying the Confederate flag at races. What do you think about it?

The link provided did not work however ..... I guess it need not, your subject header says what needs to be said ?

As for my opinion ? I disagree with their decision however .... their tracks , their rules I suppose. If the fans go one way or the other strongly enough? Will be reflected in ticket sales.

I hate to see things banned, torn down, destroyed.

I would much rather see these relics of the past explained and put into historical perspective as learning tools for young people.

The same with books like Huckleberry Finn and Gone with the Wind or banning songs sung by Kate Smith and others.

We don't need to rewrite or hide the past we need to learn from it and move on.

As far as the Confederate flag it stirs no emotion in me.

I would leave it up to those that do have feelings for it to make the decision over when and how it should be displayed.

That flag represents stolen lives, forced labor, torture, rape, families separated, murder, and degradation. Nothing to be proud of.
It represents the ideas our founding fathers had when conceiving this nation as a democracy. I am very proud of the hope for change it stands for.

Slavery is a part of our history from the beginning. But then there came a time when more people realized it was a stain on what our way of life was supposed to be. Owning other human beings just wasn't a part of the freedom that our country was meant to stand for. The hope for change came with the war and the end of slavery.

"The flag as we know it was born not as a symbol, but as a very practical banner. The commanders of the Confederate army in Virginia (then known at the Army of the Potomac) sought a distinctive emblem as an alternative to the Confederacy’s first national flag—the Stars and Bars—to serve as a battle flag."

And it represents TREASON. People who took up arms and made war upon their country. Confederate flags and confederate monuments belong in museums and historical societies, not in the everyday life of America in 2020.

And this isn’t about heritage. The flags honor the defense of slavery and white supremacy. If you want to honor your heritage, hang a picture of your great-grandfather on the wall.

Like the revolution of 1776, the south wanted to run their own country and not be under the heel of the north.

How many people would not have died if Lincoln had withdrawn the troops from Fort Sumter?

Very well said, Aunt Bea.

Freedom of expression is very precious, even when we don't agree with the sentiments being expressed.

I guess I’m too old to get all this stuff that’s going on. Tv shows being pulled, statues taken down, Military bases wanting to change their names. All my life growing up, it was just the way it was. No offense taken, no thought whatsoever given to it.
It’s a whole new world out there and I’m not getting it at all. But, at my age, it makes no difference. Our ancestors probably said the same thing about my generation.

The TV show Cops has been cancelled after 26 years, not 100% on the number of years but I'm convinced all racial issues will die off now!!!

I noticed [Live PD] wasn't on last weekend either ..... I suspect for the same reason. It speaks the truth.

Forgive me for adding this recording of the Bob Dylan song I quoted above. I have because it has all the lyrics to the song. Written when we all were young, we are now on the other side -- we are the old. Let's remember our hopes and dreams of our youth and allow the young of today to feel theirs too. Btw, the album cover displayed is one that I still own, all these years later, in semi-mint condition! If you may feel it's not appropriate to be in this thread, pardon me please. And now, I give you:

Good luck. The ones I know who hang the Confederate flag only watched The Dukes of Hazzard. They like General Lee the car. These Johnny Rebs haven't even spent time South of the Mason Dixon Line.

There's a difference between rewriting history and celebrating it via monuments, statues, flags and the like. This is especially true about a civil war fought because half of our country wanted to continue owning and enslaving millions. Young people in our country are painfully aware of our racist past. And present.

If you ask some African American who are descendants of slaves about their feelings toward the confederate flag and confederate monuments, you might develop some emotion over their display.

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."-- George Orwell
