National Sandwich Day - November 3rd

I was going to find a picture I wanted and you got it. My Dad bought different lunch meat, cheese slices, pickles, lettuce, onions, tomatoes...and whatever else . :) For awhile in my teens those sandwiches were a daily meal. I have gone through different sandwich "phases" throughout my life. They changed when my world did. Fun to think of all of those periods for me because I have always made them a quick easy meal in one.

Have you ever wondered why the sandwich has such a strange name? It's attributed to John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), a British statesman and notorious profligate and gambler, who is said to be the inventor of this type of food so that he would not have to leave his gaming table to take supper. He ordered meat between two pieces of bread, the idea being that his hands wouldn't get greasy from the meat and stain the playing cards. Others, who were as addicted to gambling as Montagu, seeing that, would then say to the waiter whilst pointing at Montagu's plate: "Get me a sandwich."

Somehow, "bring me a Sub," just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Sandwich is a UK town in the county of Kent.

The first written record of a sandwich appeared in a Londoner’s journal………….the cooks at London’s’ Beef Steak Club are said to have invented the sandwich inn 1772…today in national sandwich day....

The 11th Earl of Sandwich otherwise known as Lord (John) Montagu, lives on the family estate of Mapperton in Dorset UK. He currently serves in the House of Lords, in the UK Parliament.

According to him people in England were certainly eating sandwiches long before they were ever called sandwiches and does not think his ancestor invented the “sandwich” …nor.. does he believe his ancester was a gambling addict since most people of the gentry gambled as a past time.

Roasted red peppers on a sandwich is a favorite of mine. I never put cheese on a meat sandwich, even burgers-unless there is roasted red pepper.

Love salami; it needs no spread. Ham sandwich w/butter and Dijon mustard, chicken salad, roast beef w/ horseradish-mayo are my favorites. Also grilled cheese and tuna salad.
