I will point out that NATO is a military alliance, while the European Union is an economic group. My country Canada was a founding nation of NATO. The full title is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In the 50's and 60's Canada maintained a large military presence in West Germany, including ground troops, tank brigades, artillery units, and 12 RCAF fighter squadrons. This force, along with British and American units, would act as a defensive force, if the Soviet Union launched an attack in to the west. JimB.
