Needles in strawberries - Australia

As of this moment there is no indication of who might be doing this horrible thing. Nor do we know how and where the needles are being inserted into the berries. It seems to be just fruit from Queensland that is affected so far.

I can only shake my head in disbelief that anyone could even think of doing such a thing.

New South Wales Police have confirmed the first case of strawberries contaminated with needles bought from a Sydney supermarket. The needles were discovered in three strawberries in a single punnet, which a customer had bought from Coles in Engadine in Sydney's south.

The customer handed the punnet in to Sutherland Area Police Command, where it will undergo forensic testing.
Police said no one was injured by the contaminated berries by the brand Delightful Strawberries, sourced from Queensland.

Six brands of strawberries are now believed to be affected by needle and pin contamination according to police, including Donnybrook Berries, Love Berry, Delightful Strawberries, Oasis brands, Berry Obsession and Berry Licious.

The incidents have been piling up, with contaminated strawberries found with needles purchased at supermarkets in Queensland, NSW and Victoria.

Last week, Queensland Health confirmed Donnybrook strawberries, supplied to supermarkets across the nation from its farms north of Brisbane, had been found contaminated with sewing needles.

Coles issued a statement today saying it had already removed Donnybrook strawberries as requested by Queensland Health, but now it would remove all brands of Queensland grown strawberries for the time being.

"As a precaution, Coles is also withdrawing all brands and sizes of Queensland grown strawberry punnets from sale in Coles supermarkets in all states [except Western Australia], in Coles Express stores and via Coles online."
[h=2]Queensland Government issues $100,000 reward[/h]The Queensland Government has put out a $100,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the culprit behind the contamination of the strawberries.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, urged the community to come together to find the person responsible behind the "callous act".

"This is putting families' lives at risk and it's also putting the strawberry industry at risk," she said.

I often buy a punnet of strawberries to serve to the children at our church playgroups. Fortunately I don't serve them whole. I shudder to think what could happen if I did not cut them.

I have no idea either how they will survive this .. first of many attacks of foods... I bought a box of strawberries the other day ..
and before they were advertised .. no needles , I do hope the culprit can be found . but so many companies and so many strawberries maybe
the needles are inserted at the markets where they sell them all as how many strawberry growers would there be to have someone from each farm
do this .. horrible thought ..

From what I seen on the TV this morning Warri they appear to be very fine nails as what they showed had heads on them.

Surley someone would have noticed something suspicious in the packing shed? I’d think it’s highy unlikely someone would be working alone while packing and they are in sealed containers so they couldn’t be tampered with after being packed without ripping the sealed containers

Luckily south Australian strawberries are not effected as I buy them almost weekly

A grudge. Investigators are focusing on all ex employees of the producers, especially when there were some issues involved, although, this, of course, is very difficult, as there have been many seasonal labourers who have since come and gone, and the record of their employment isn`t very reliable, or accurate.
