Watched 4 episodes yesterday and i agree with you. As i told Irwin only one major thing i absolutely foresaw early and the details weren't clear to me just Just the priest's identity i guessed by barely into Ep 2. The more shows of this type surprise me the more i enjoy them. One pleasant surprise in this is deft examination of the good/evil dichotomy and how one's worldview can muddy someone's perception about which is which. Don't want to say too much cause don't want to spoil it for anyone, but i like a show that is well plotted.Midnight Mass is by far my favorite new show on Netflix this year. It is written and developed by the same person who did The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor and covers the same topics (dysfunctional family, addiction, mental illness, religion). There are not as many "fright scares" as in his previous two shows but it is just as creepy. If you are not into gothic horror shows that covers some rather heavy topics then I would not recommend it. However if if that does not bother you and you are looking to watch something spooky for Halloween week then I highly recommend it.
Funny story about 'fright scares' or in some 'jump scares' as DD calls them. Things that have other people reacting like that rarely impact me the same way, partly because i tend to expect them. When my kids were young i taught them the trick of muting sound in creepy scenes to teach them how much the filmmakers tend to 'direct' the viewers' emotional responses. Also pointing out that certain types of music can actually give early warning a jump scare is coming. It is so rare for me to react to them that my DD was as shocked by my actually moving back in my seat over one during the movie 'Descent' as by the scene itself. i had caught glimpses of the cave creatures and had been leaning forward trying to make out more detail when they did big reveal with one right by one of the cavers. Between the unexpected full view and the unpleasant appearance of the thing i did indeed startle over it.
